Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League Results For Wednesday 7-13-22

 Had to miss out on the Wednesday action after the Fourth of July (7-6) but certainly was not going to miss out on this last Wednesday night's action so here's the results of the games I got to cover on this night:  

6:15 P.M. Games

On Court 1 in the 6:15 P.M. slot, the Carleton team was a bit short-handed on this night and that resulted in the Northwestern team splitting itself up a bit to help out.  The Northwestern team would get up early on in the contest by a 15-6 count and hold a 17-11 lead by the end of the first period.  The Northwestern team would still be up 25-18 early on in the second period but things would get tightened up as the Carleton team would have the deficit reduced to three at 33-30 late in the second period and that would be the score by the halftime break.  The Northwestern team would open up a bit more space again up 37-30 early on in the third period although the Carleton team would be hanging around down 47-42 midway through the fourth period.  The Northwestern team would start pulling away after that, however, as the would cruise to a relatively easy win.......A much more interesting contest was taking place over on Court 2, however, that saw the Hamline team taking on the Guards Of The Galaxy team.  The Guards Of The Galaxy team would be paced on this Wednesday night by some terrific play from former GAC standout Marisa Gustafson (GAC '21).  With the Guards Of The Galaxy team holding a 5-4 lead early on, Gustafson; the former Mahtomedi standout, would drain a "3" to give her team a bit more breathing space with an 8-4 advantage by the 5:40 mark of the first period.  Gustafson would come through with more heroics just before the end of the first period as her lay-up before the buzzer gave the Guards Of The Galaxy team an 18-9 advantage.  The Hamline team would manage to tighten up things by the 6:20 mark of the second period down 19-15 but the Guards Of The Galaxy team would then take their cue and unleash a 7-0 burst to open up some more space again with a 26-19 lead just beyond the midway point of the second period and by the halftime break, the Guards Of The Galaxy team would have this cushion maintained up 32-24.  The Guards Of The Galaxy team would establish a double-digit cushion up 36-24 early on in the third period and thanks to a Gustafson lay-up, the Guards Of The Galaxy team team would still enjoy a ten-point cushion up 38-28 and by the end of the third period they were still maintaining that ten-point lead at 43-33.  But, if there's been one team that's had a flair for the dramatics at this year's Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League, it's been the Hamline team and they showed that again once the fourth period got underway as they went on a 6-0 burst; cutting the deficit to four at 43-39.  The Guards Of The Galaxy team would get back some of that breathing space again with a 50-44 advantage by the midway point of the fourth period but right back came the Hamline team as a 4-0 push had them right back in the thick of things down 50-48 with 2:20 left.  With 1:45 left, the Hamline team got this game knotted at 50 and the fortunes of the Guards Of The Galaxy team looked precarious at best.  To their credit, however, they held firm and got two important pairs of free throws down in the last minute of play as they escaped Dodge with a 54-50 victory......Over on Court 3, the GAC Gold team was taking on The Melting Pots team and this contest would be knotted at four a piece early on in the opening period.  A 6-0 run by the GAC Gold team had them up 10-4 late in the first period but The Melting Pots team showed they weren't going anywhere anytime soon as they reduced the deficit down to four at 12-8 by the end of the first period.  By the 7:39 mark of the second period, The Melting Pots team had this contest tied at 14 and things would be nip-and-tuck for most of the second period before the GAC Gold team got a second wind; grabbing a 21-17 advantage late in the second period and by the halftime break, the GAC Gold team was up 24-19.  But right back came The Melting Pots team as they shrunk the deficit down to a single possession down 27-25 by the 6:30 mark/  That got the attention of the GAC Gold team as they went right back to work to establish a bit more breathing room with a 34-29 lead late in the third period and they would up that lead to seven by the end of the third period at 36-29.  And the GAC Gold team was just getting started as a 7-0 push out of the gate at the beginning of the fourth period had them up 43-29 near the midway point of the fourth period.  A "3" by sophomore-to-be Kylie Baranick stretched the lead for the GAC Gold team to 46-33 in the latter stages of the fourth period and although The Melting Pots team would make a late run, the GAC Gold team had the cushion to withstand it.  

In the 7:00 P.M. slot, a good one was unexpectedly brewing on Court 1 between the GAC Alumni team and the St. Kate's team.  The St. Kate's team would get off to a very good start in this one; grabbing an 8-2 lead in the latter stages of the opening period and they would maintain that six-point edge up 10-4 by the end of the first period.  Despite the sluggish start by the GAC Alumni team, they finally got things going once the second period got underway as a quick 5-0 push cut the deficit to one at 10-9 early on in the second period and by the 7:10 mark of the second period, the GAC Alumni team had finally poked its nose out in front by an 11-10 count.  In the latter stages of the fourth period, the GAC Alumni team had built a 15-11 advantage but the St. Kate's team got a boost from senior-to-be Bree Glynn with her lay-up with 2:50 left to get back to within a single possession down 15-13 and by the halftime break, this one was leveled at 19.  The GAC Alumni team would gain the upper hand again once the third period got going and build a 24-19 advantage by the 6:30 mark.  The St. Kate's team would manage to get right back into the thick of things; getting back to within a single possession again down 25-23 in the latter stages of the third period but a late score by Miranda Rice (GAC '18) helped give the GAC Alumni team a bit of a cushion again with a 29-23 advantage by the end of the third period.  But this St. Kate's team wasn't going anywhere anytime soon as the GAC Alumni team was clinging to a somewhat precarious 31-28 lead by the midway point of the fourth period and with 2:05 left, the St. Kate's team got the chance they were waiting for as they got the deficit cut to one at 31-30.  But the St. Kate's team was unable to complete the deal down the stretch despite numerous chances as the GAC Alumni team squeaked by again with a tough victory......Meanwhile, another doozy of a contest was ensuing nearby over on Court 2 between the Old But Not That Old team and the GAC Black team.  The Old But Not That Old team got off to a solid start in this one; grabbing an 8-2 lead midway through the opening period.  But the GAC Black team would come right back; cutting the deficit to one at 8-7 late in the first period and with 1:50 left in the opening period, the GAC Black team would poke its nose out in front at 9-8.  Fittingly, this one would be tied by the end of the first period at 12 a piece.  The Old But Not That Old team would take the lead back by a 17-15 count early on in the second period but shaking off this young GAC Black team was proving to be quite a task as they would usurp the advantage with a 29-25 lead in the latter stages of the second period with a 29-25 lead and the GAC Black team would be up 31-29 by the halftime break.  This back-and-forth affair continued into the third period as the Old But Not That Old team would retake the lead at 32-31 early on but the GAC Black team would take it right back in the latter stages of the third period at 42-40.  Down 43-40 with seconds remaining in the third period, the Old But Not That Old team got a big boost from former UST standout Madi Radtke as her tip-in at the buzzer had the deficit down to one at 43-42.  The GAC Black team would be clinging to this one-point lead at 45-44 early on in the fourth period but a burst by the Old But Not That Old team had them back out in front at 50-47 midway through the fourth period.  The GAC Black team was hanging tough, however, and a score in the paint by junior-to-be Syd Hauger cut the deficit down to one at 50-49 with plenty of time (4:40) left.  Hauger would come through again with a lay-up with 3:17 left to keep the GAC Black team within a single possession down 54-51.  Hauger would also get one free throw to go down with 2:00 left that had the deficit down to two at 54-52 with 2:00 left but they could never get closer than that as former Lakeville North standout Caitlyn Peterson (SCSU '21) would come through big-time for the Old But Not That Old team with a tough lay-up with 1:30 left to make it 56-52 as the Old But Not That Old team came through with a tough victory......No such drama over on Court 3 as the UW-River Falls team was making quick work of the St. Olaf team with the former enjoying a 22-5 advantage by the end of the first period.  A "3" early on in the second period bloated the lead to 25-5 for the UW-River Falls team and although the St. Olaf team finally found some semblance of offense, they were still staring at a sizable 30-12 deficit by the midway point of the second period and by the halftime break, the UW-River Falls team was up handily at 37-18.  The St. Olaf team tried to cut some fat off of the deficit when the third period got going but the UW-River Falls team was still enjoying a 45-29 advantage by the end of the third period.  Things were pretty much academic by the midway point of the fourth period with the UW-River Falls team enjoying a hefty 55-34 advantage as they rolled to an easy victory.

Had to take off before the 7:40 games got going to get my "beauty rest" for work the next morning.  Only two more weeks left of the Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League so get on down!

 Another wild night at the Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League this last Wednesday night and here's the results of the games I was able to cover:

If the word "nuthouse" and "basketball" could be used in the same breath, that would aptly describe much of the action I got to cover on this Wednesday night and there were a handful of entertaining games to say the least.  It all started over on Court 1 in the 6:15 P.M. slot that saw the GAC Gold team taking on the Augsburg team in something of another rematch of this last season's MIAC Championship Game.  As you might expect, this one would be tight at the outset with the Augsburg team holding a 3-2 advantage at the 8:35 mark of the opening period and the game would be leveled at 6 a piece with 2:30 left in the first period.  Fittingly, things would still be deadlocked at nine by the end of the first period as well.  The Augsburg team would take the initiative once the second period got underway; grabbing a 16-14 advantage and a "3" would push that lead to 19-14 near the midway point of the second period.  Curiously, the GAC Gold team would struggle offensively and that allowed the Augsburg team to establish some breathing room; getting a 26-16 lead late in the second period and enjoying a 28-19 advantage by the halftime break.  But somehow you knew that the GAC Gold team wouldn't be held down for long and they started clawing their way back into the thick of things once the third period got underway; cutting the deficit to seven at 31-24 early on in the third period and closing to four points down 34-30 midway through the third period.  The Augsburg team was still clinging to that four-point advantage up 36-32 late in the third period but by the end of the third period, the GAC Gold team made it a one-possession game down 38-36.  The Augsburg team again tried to open up a bit more breathing space once the fourth period got underway; getting a 40-37 advantage early on but this GAC Gold team was not going anywhere as they would eventually get this one leveled and get on a push that had them in the driver's seat with a 46-42 advantage.  But just when you thought that the GAC Gold team had control of things, the Augsburg team said, "Not so fast".  A jumper by junior-to-be Kalena Myers reduced the deficit to one at 46-45 with 1:45 left.  Another score by the Augsburg team suddenly propelled them back out in front at 47-46 and senior-to-be Jaley Coplin would add an insurance lay-up with :25 left that helped give the Augsburg team a dramatic 49-46 victory and exacted a bit of revenge for what took place back in late February......  Sandwiching the two wild games in this time slot was the contest over on Court 2 between the CSB team and The Melting Pots team.  Though the CSB team would start out a bit slow; taking an early 3-0 lead in the opening minutes of the first period and growing that to 6-0 by the midway point of the first period, the floodgates would soon open up as the CSB team would close out this opening period on a 10-1 run to hold a 16-1 lead by the end of the first period.  By the midway point of the second period, the CSB team was rolling; up 24-7 before The Melting Pots team finally found some semblance of offense and cut the CSB team's lead down to 26-14 by the halftime break.  But a quick 6-2 push by the CSB team at the start of the third period put to rest any notion of The Melting Pots team making serious inroads on this one with the CSB team up 32-16.  By the end of the third period, things were pretty much academic on this one with the CSB team up comfortably at 43-19 and by the midway point, it was all over but the crying as the CSB team was cruising up 48-26 as they cruised to an easy win......  The other wild game going on during this time slot was ensuing over on Court 3 as two old MIAC rivals; the Carleton team and the Hamline team, were going at it and using the term "wild" may not have done this contest justice.  In any event, scoring would come at something of a premium when this one got underway with the Carleton team clinging to a 2-1 lead by the midway point of the first period but then the Hamline team got untracked and got on a scoring spree to hold an 11-4 lead by the end of the first period.  That got the attention of the Carleton team as they quickly woke up and got the deficit cut to two point at 16-14 early on in the second period and they would eventually get this one leveled at 16 just beyond the midway point of the second period.  Both teams would hunker down defensively and this one would be knotted at 18 a piece by the halftime break.  The Hamline team would poke its nose out in front by a 22-21 count early on in the third period and a "3" would give them a little breathing space with a 25-21 advantage by the 6:45 mark of the third period.  The Hamline team would hold a 29-25 lead late in the third period and by the end of the third period they had re-established that five point lead at 32-27.  But counting this Carleton team out has proven to be a dangerous proposition before and they closed the gap to two points at 34-32 by the 6:00 mark of the fourth period and the Hamline team was still trying to nurse that two-point advantage with 4:00 left in regulation up 36-34.  The Carleton team would finally get this one tied up at 36 with 3:35 left and with 2:00 left the game would still be tied at 39 a piece as the tension mounted.  With 1:00 left in regulation, the Carleton team would poke its nose out in front by a 41-39 count but the Hamline team would come right back to get this one leveled at 41 with :25 left in regulation.  The Carleton team would gain a one-point edge at 42-41 on one free throw with :15 left but the Hamline team came back on their next possession and managed to get one freebie to go down after a foul with :06 left in regulation to tie this one at 42 so off we went to overtime.  Both teams had several chances to win the game in the first two minute extra session but neither team could get anything to fall so this one would have to be somehow settled in the second extra 1:00 session.  It was here toward the end where senior-to-be Chan'el Anderson-Manning showed her stuff for the Hamline team as she would wheel and deal with the clock ticking down and drive into traffic and connect on a lay-up that also drew a foul and her "and one" finally sealed the deal for the Hamline team in easily the most thrilling game thus far.

You'd have to figure that after that wild 6:15 P.M. slot that anything after that would be anticlimactic.  But the 7:00 P.M. slot did everything it could to say "Hold my beer" as some more fun games unfolded.  On Court 1, the UW-River Falls team was taking on the GAC Alumni team and the former got off to a good start in this one; getting up 6-2 midway through the first period although the GAC Alumni team would tighten things up by the end of the first period that saw them down only 10-9.  This one would stay tight throughout the second period as the UW-River Falls team would hold a 19-17 lead midway through the second period but by the halftime break, the GAC Alumni team would have this one leveled at 25 a piece.  The GAC Alumni team wound find a second wind once the third period got going as they would forge a 36-32 lead midway through the third period and they would increase the lead to five at 39-34 by the time the third period ended.  The GAC Alumni team maintained that five-point cushion in the early part of the fourth period and by the midway point of the fourth period they still enjoyed a 41-36 advantage.  Whether or not the GAC Alumni team started running out of gas down the stretch is up for debate but the UW-River Falls team was able to craftily work its way back into this one down the stretch and with a minute left in regulation, the GAC Alumni team was clinging to a precarious one-point 44-43 advantage.  They would manage to get that lead up to 45-43 after a free throw with :04.2 left but the UW-River Falls team had one chance left on their next possession.  With time winding down, a good look was had but the shot wouldn't cooperate and the GAC Alumni team escaped with the narrow victory......Another fun one was taking place over on Court 2 that had the Midwest Basketball team taking on the Old But Not That Old team.  Things would be close in this one from the get-go and by the end of the first period, the Midwest Basketball team had the upper hand with a 15-13 advantage.  The Old But Not That Old team would take the initiative once the second period got underway and usurp the advantage with a 21-17 lead early on in the second period and they would get a bit more breathing room with a 26-21 advantage midway through the second period.  But right back came the Midwest Basketball team as they would get this one tied at 28 with 3:00 left in the second period and by the halftime break the Midwest Basketball team had snared the lead back at 32-28.  The Old But Not That Old team would keep this one close, however, and would trail by just one at 34-33 early on in the third period and they would eventually get this one tied again at 37 a piece at the midway point of the third period.  Down the stretch of this third period, the Old But Not That Old team would retake the lead and by the end of the third period, it definitely looked like things were trending their way with a 45-40 advantage.  Both teams would go into a bit of a funk scoring-wise once the fourth period got underway and the Old But Not That Old team would still cling to basically the same advantage with a 45-41 lead midway through but the Midwest Basketball team would soon catch a second wind and take a 49-47 lead with 2:40 left.  The Old But Not That Old team would regain the lead at 50-49 with 1:30 left and the Midwest Basketball team had several opportunities in their last few possessions to try and steal this one but couldn't get their shots to cooperate when they need it most as the Old But Not That Old team sneaked away with a narrow victory.......Another good one was brewing over on Court 3 that saw two geographically close MIAC rivals facing off against each other with the St. Kate's team taking on the Macalester team.  The Macalester team would hold the upper hand in this one in the early minutes of the first period and hold a 6-2 lead midway through the first period but the St. Kate's team would shake off the early cobwebs and get the deficit shaved down to one down 7-6 late in the first period and the Macalester team would still be clinging to that one-point edge at 9-8 by the end of the first period.  The Macalester team would manage to create some space once the second period got going and would hold a 17-13 advantage midway through the second period but the St. Kate's team was staying right in the thick of things as they would close to two points down 20-18 in the latter stages of the second period and down only 29-27 at the halftime break.  The St. Kate's team would snare the advantage away once the third period got going and they would hold a 37-33 advantage midway through the third period although the Macalester team would stay within a single possession down 44-41 by the end of the third period.  The Macalester team would stay within striking distance down 46-43 early on in the fourth period and this one seemed to hang on the balance for quite some time.  The St. Kate's team would hold a tenous 54-53 lead with :57 left and two free throws by senior-to-be Bree Glynn would get the lead to 56-53.  Still plenty of time for the Macalester team to counter but they would fire blanks in the last minute of play.  Glynn would be fouled again with :43.2 left and two more free throws by the former Totino-Grace standout gave the St. Kate's team some more breathing room up 58-53.  Junior-to-be Karis Zezza would get fouled with :31.7 left and the former STMA standout got two free throws to go down to make it 60-53.  The St. Kate's team would add one last score for insurance purposes and got a hard-earned win.

 Was back at it on this Wednesday night at the Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League and here's the results of the games I was able to cover on this night:

All I can say, is that if you wanted to be in the right place at the right time where you had some very good and very close games going on, then the 6:15 P.M. slot this last Wednesday night at the Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League is exactly where you wanted to be at and I had a heckuva time trying to keep up with everything happening on all three courts so bear with me on this one.  😁 So first, over on Court 1, the Midwest Basketball team was taking on the GAC Alumni team and you knew somehow that this one was going to be good from the get-go.  It would be the Midwest Basketball team having the upper hand early on in this contest as they would hold a 7-3 advantage midway through the opening period and they would grow that lead to 20-12 by the end of the first period.  A three-point bomb early on in the second period would expand the Midwest Basketball team's lead to 23-12 and in the latter stages of the second period, the GAC Alumni team appeared to be in a heap of trouble down 31-17 although one late score just before the halftime buzzer cut into that deficit just a bit to make it 31-19.  A 5-0 push by the Midwest Basketball team early on in the third period to make it 36-19 had things looking quite dire for the GAC Alumni team but somehow, someway, the GAC Alumni team hunkered down and slowly but surely battled their way back into this one and by the end of the third period, that had closed the gap to six at 45-39.  By this juncture, momentum was clearly on the side of the GAC Alumni team and that was underscored even more when they closed the gap to a scant point at 45-44 early on in the fourth period.  The GAC Alumni team would eventually poke its nose out in front and hold a 52-49 lead in the latter stages of the fourth period but the Midwest Basketball team would eventually get this one tied at 52 which is how things ended in regulation.  So, a 1:00 overtime period was in the offing and both teams missed out on opportunities early on.  Finally, in the waning seconds, the GAC Alumni team got the break they were looking for and got it from the player you would have least expected to get it from - Megan Morgan - who is actually going to be a freshman at CSB this next season.  She was fouled with no time left and got one free throw to go down as the GAC Alumni team got an incredibly thrilling and fun win.......So, while all this was going on, another fun one was brewing over on Court 2 in a WIAC/MIAC clash of sorts with the UW-River Falls team taking on the Macalester team and you knew that this one had unpredictability written all over it.  Things started out as a very low-scoring affair with the UW-River Falls team clinging to a 2-0 advantage in the early stages of the contest but things would be knotted at five a piece midway through the first period and then the Macalester team would use a 4-0 push to hold a 9-5 lead by the end of the first period.  The Macalester team would still hold the upper hand with a 16-11 lead midway through the second period but it didn't take long for the UW-River Falls team to get untracked and get into a bit of a groove offensively.  One three-point bomb leveled the game at 16 with 2:20 left and the UW-River Falls team would soon take a 19-16 lead.  Not to be outdone, the Macalester team would respond with a three-point bomb of their own with just :03 left as this one was deadlocked at 19 by the halftime break.  The Macalester team would hold a slim 23-22 advantage early on in the third period and they would still be up 25-24 near the midway point of the third period.  The UW-River Falls team would soon get the contest leveled at 25 and then use a push in the late stages of the third period to forge a 32-28 lead heading into the fourth period.  The Macalester team would soon recover, however, and with 3:10 left in regulation, they would hold a 36-35 advantage but a "3" by the UW-River Falls team would push them back out in front 38-36 with 2:35 left and another quick push by them would grow that lead to six at 42-36 with 1:25 left.  The Macalester teams wasn't ready to waive the white flag just yet, however, and managed to close to within a single possession down 42-39 with :25 left but they were unable to get any closer as the UW-River Falls team claimed a hard-earned "W"......And if that wasn't enough, another fun one was going down over on Court 3 in a MIAC/UMAC clash of sorts that saw the St. Kate's team taking on the Northwestern team.  Things would be tight early on in this contest as well with the Northwestern team taking a 3-2 lead on a three-point bomb at the 7:50 mark of the opening period and that seemed to give the Northwestern team a boost as they would grow their lead to 12-6 in the latter stages of the first period and still be up 14-10 by the end of the first period.  The Northwestern team would still enjoy a 19-14 advantage midway through the second period but the St. Kate's team would soon make things uncomfortable for its opponent as they would close to within a single possession down 19-16 and stay in that three-point range down 22-19 at the halftime break.  The Northwestern team would get on a push after the halftime break, however and get some breathing room established with a 32-23 lead midway through the 3rd period and they would still hold a nine-point edge up 41-32 by the end of the third period.  So while it appeared that the Northwestern team definitely had the upper hand going into the fourth period, the St. Kate's team slyly whittled away at the deficit as the fourth period ensued and with 1:45 left in regulation, the Northwestern team's lead was down to four at 51-47 and things would become precarious for them when the St. Kate's team closed the gap to a scant point down 51-50 but the St. Kate's team was unable to complete its comeback bid as the Northwestern team held on for an exciting victory.  

The 7:00 P.M. slot seemed like a letdown after everything that took place beforehand but still some interesting action nonetheless.  On Court 1, the Guards Of The Galaxy team was taking on the GAC Black team in a game that was basically former Gusties versus current Gusties.  The Guards Of The Galaxy team would hold a 5-4 edge early on in the contest but the GAC Black team would get things turned around in their favor late in this first period with a 17-16 advantage and one free throw would up that lead to 18-16 by the end of the first period.  The GAC Black team would open up a bit more space with a 26-20 lead midway through the second period and a 33-28 advantage by the halftime break.  In the third period, the Guards Of The Galaxy team started to falter just a bit and that allowed the youngsters on the GAC Black team to establish a double-digit advantage at 48-33 late in the third period and by the end of the third period they were still up comfortably at 55-42.  Not much would change in the early stages of the fourth period with the GAC Black team enjoying a 59-47 lead and just beyond the midway point of the fourth period they had things in cruise control up 69-54 to get the win in the end......Over on Court two, the other half of these GAC young ones - the GAC Gold team - was taking on the UW-River Falls team which was doing double-duty on this night and after a tough one in the 6:15 P.M. slot, they soon found that their collective gas tank was running a bit on the low side as the GAC Gold team would establish the lead early on and hold a 13-5 lead late in the second half and enjoy a 19-10 lead by the halftime break.  The GAC Gold team's lead would stretch to 28-12 early on in the third period and by the end of the third period they were up comfortably 34-14.  I was unable to get the score on this one during the fourth period because the danged sun was shining right on the scoreboard and when the game ended, the scoreboard operator turned the score off.  😒  That'll happen.......And not much drama to speak of either on Court 3 that had two old MIAC rivals facing off with the CSB team taking on the Carleton team.  Whether the CSB team was looking to make amends from the night before is unsure but they definitely came out with a purpose early on as they would get a lead and hold onto it like a snapping turtle; up 19-5 late in the first period and a three-point bomb helped the CSB team establish a sizable 24-8 lead by the end of the first period.  By the latter stages of the second period, the CSB team had the lead stretched out to twenty at 36-16 and although the Carleton team was able to make a push down the stretch, they were still on the wrong side of a 36-23 game at the halftime break.  The CSB team would kick it into gear again once the third period got underway; up 46-28 midway through the third period and up 51-37 at the end of the third period.  The CSB team would manage to keeps its opponent at bay throughout the fourth period; enjoying a 67-54 advantage just beyond the midway point as they had it in cruise control the rest of the way enroute to the win.

Had to head home to get some much-needed rest on this night for another workday so was unable to cover the 7:40 P.M. games.....This next week, the Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League reverts to a Wednesday night-only format so make sure you get down to catch all the action.   

Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League Results For Tuesday 6-21-22

Only two games in the 6:15 P.M. slot on this night as the St. Olaf team was not present and forced the Hamline team to do a red/gray intra-squad scrimmage.  However, any disappointment there was more than made up for with the action happening on nearby Court 2 as two other MIAC rivals, the Carleton team and the Bethel team went at it.  Somewhat surprisingly, it would be the Carleton team taking charge early on with a 2-0 lead in the opening minutes and a 6-2 advantage midway through the first period.  The Carleton team would get its lead stretched to 13-5 in the latter stages of this opening period and by the end of the first period, the Carleton team enjoyed a somewhat shocking 15-7 advantage.  The Bethel team wouldn't be held down for long, however, and they went to work once the second period got underway, getting the deficit down to five at 16-11 at the 7:00 mark of this second period and then closing the gap to a single possession down by just two at 18-16 at the midway point of the second period.  Still, the Carleton team would manage to hang on to this small advantage down the stretch to own a 26-23 lead by the halftime break.  The Bethel team was able to find a cure for whatever ailed it in the first half as they went to work once the third period got underway and usurped the advantage; getting a 31-28 lead at the 6:40 mark of the third period and stretching it six at 36-30 by the midway point of the third period.  By the end of the third period, the Bethel team appeared to be pretty much in control of things with an eight-point advantage at 42-34 but counting this Carleton team out would prove to be a dangerous proposition.  The Carleton team would get on a push once the fourth period got underway; getting the deficit cut down to four at 42-38 early on and by the midway point of the fourth period, the Carleton team had this game leveled at 46 a piece.  As you would imagine, this one would be nip and tuck going down the stretch with neither side willing to give an inch.  The Bethel team would hold a 50-48 advantage with 2:40 left and it would still be 50-48 with 1:00 left.  The Carleton team would get this one deadlocked again at 50 on a score with :39 left but the Bethel team would come right back on its next possession to retake the lead and snuffed out the last gasp by the Carleton team to hold on for an exciting victory.......One team that's been looking for some sort of redemption since the Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer league got started early this month is the Augsburg team; a squad that's been on the wrong end of some bad breaks and other misfortunes.  Their task at hand wouldn't be easy on this night as they were taking on a CSB team that had thus far looked quite impressive.  But on this night, the Augsburg team said "Enough" and they went to work right away; building an 8-2 advantage by the 6:35 mark of the first period and getting it to 10-2 midway through the first period.  Making matters worse for the CSB team is that senior-to-be Jaley Coplin would start getting warmed up too as her jumper stretched the Augsburg team's lead to 16-2 with 2:25 left in the opening period.  By the end of the first period, the CSB team was in a serious hole down 18-4 and things would not get better for them either once the second period got underway.  The Augsburg team would continue on this roll; up 22-4 early on in the second period and then some three-point terror from Coplin had the Augsburg team up comfortably at 25-6 at the 6:25 mark.  The Augsburg team would maintain this nineteen-point edge up 29-10 late in the second period and they would be up 29-12 by the halftime break.  Another player who contributed quite well on this night for the Augsburg team was junior-to-be Katie Manecke as her "3" made it 32-14 early on in the third period.  By the latter stages of the third period, the Augsburg team's lead ballooned to 39-16 and by the end of the third period they were rolling up 42-24.  The CSB team tried cutting into this sizable deficit early on in the fourth period but the Augsburg team would get some more help from senior-to-be Grace Eastman and her jumper that helped the Augsburg team get a 48-30 lead midway through the fourth period.  Another three-point bomb by Coplin in the latter stages of this contest added some insurance as the Augsburg team cruised to an easy win.  

The normal supply of three games in the 7:00 P.M. slot on this evening.  Something had to give over on Court 1 as two "mixed" alumni squads - Guards Of The Galaxy and Old But Not That Old - went at it.  Guards Of The Galaxy team would get off to a very good start; building a 10-2 lead early on but two quick scores by the Old But Not That Old team would soon tighten things up at 10-6 and a "3" a bit later on suddenly made it a one-point game at 10-9 and things would stay tight with the Guards Of The Galaxy team holding a somewhat tenuous 15-13 lead by the end of the first period.  The Old But Not That Old team would then turn the tables on its opponent; grabbing a 20-17 lead early on in the second period but the Guards Of The Galaxy team would soon have this one knotted at 20 a piece at the 6:10 mark of the second period and one free throw a bit later would push the Guards Of The Galaxy team up 21-20 and they would manage to hold this slim one-point lead with 1:00 left in this second period up but by the halftime break the Guards Of The Galaxy team had established a bit more breathing room with a 29-25 advantage.  The Guards Of The Galaxy team maintained this four-point edge up 37-33 early on in the third period and by the midway point of the third period the Guards Of The Galaxy team increased that cushion to six points up 41-35 and by the end of the third period, it looked to be all Guards Of The Galaxy as they owned a 51-42 lead.  The Guards Of The Galaxy team still had things going their way by the midway point of the fourth period as they enjoyed at 56-49 advantage but the Old But Not That Old team would make one more run at this thing; cutting the deficit down to four at 63-59 with 1:15 left.  It was at this point, however, that the Old But Not That Old team finally ran out of gas and the Guards Of The Galaxy team was able to get a few insurance scores in the waning minutes to get an important win.....Two familiar MIAC rivals were going at it on Court 2 as the St. Kate's team was taking on the GAC Gold team.  The GAC Gold team would get off to a solid start; getting a 7-2 lead early on and holding a 13-8 lead in the latter stages of the first period and stretching it to 17-8 by the end of the first period.  The St. Kate's team would hang tough throughout the second period, however, and would have the deficit whittled down to a much-more manageable six points at 31-25 by the halftime break.  One free throw by senior-to-be Bree Glynn early on in the third period would bring the St. Kate's team a bit closer down 31-26 but the GAC Gold team would re-establish its breathing space once again by the midway point of the third period up 38-29 and by the end of the third period, the GAC  Gold team was still in full control up 41-34.  The GAC Gold would maintain this seven-point edge up 47-40 early on in the fourth period but this St. Kate's team would try and threaten again as this fourth period progressed and two free throws kept the hopes alive down 47-42 by the 6:33 mark.  Ultimately, however, not enough clean possessions by the St. Kate's team and some timely scores by the GAC Gold team helped give the latter a ten-point win at the end......Doing double-duty on this night didn't seem to faze the Carleton team one bit as they would take on The Melting Pots team on Court 3 in this time slot.  The Carleton team would seem to have control of this one; up 8-4 in the latter stages of the first period and still up 11-8 by the end of the first period.  Things would stay close throughout the second period with the Carleton team holding the upper hand but The Melting Pots team would make a sudden charge in the latter stages of the second period; poking their nose out in front 17-16 and a lay-up in transition just before the halftime break had them up 20-17.  It would be The Melting Pots team's turn now to nurse a small lead and they would do that; holding a 28-27 advantage midway through the third period and still leading 33-32 by the end of the third period.  The Carleton team would get things turned around once the fourth period got underway; grabbing a 34-33 advantage early on and then getting a bit more breathing room with a 36-33 lead a bit later.  But The Melting Pots team would again come back and claim a 45-44 advantage with 3:15 left.  The Carleton team would get this one leveled at 47 a piece with 1:35 left and you knew this one had all the ingredients for a fantastic finish.  Two free throws by the Carleton team had them back up at 49-47 but The Melting Pots team would get this one tied up again at 49 on their next possession.  After a foiled possession by the Carleton team, The Melting Pots team would take a 51-49 lead on a lay-up and they seemed to be in position to close this one out.  But the Carleton team had vastly different ideas and a "3" with just :10 left would be the difference in their narrow 52-51 victory.

Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League Results For Wednesday 6-15-22

Two old MIAC rivals were going head-to-head over on Court 1 in the 6:15 P.M. slot on this Wednesday evening as the GAC Black team was taking on the Carleton team.  The Carleton team would manage to grab an early 5-3 lead in the opening period but it didn't take long for the GAC Black team to start strutting its stuff.  A three-point bomb by senior-to-be Anna Sanders pushed the GAC Black team out in front 8-7 at the 6:30 mark and the GAC Black team would establish some breathing room in the latter stages of this first period; building a 19-12 advantage.  But the Carleton team had enough spunk in them collectively to launch an 8-1 push to forge a 20-20 tie by the end of the first period.  But the GAC Black team would quickly throw any notions of a close game out the window once the second period got underway; going on a key 9-0 run to hold a 29-20 lead at the 7:40 mark and by the 6:10 mark, the GAC Black team now had a double-digit advantage at 31-20 and they would maintain this cushion down the stretch as they would enjoy a 40-29 lead at the half.  The GAC Black lead would bulge to twenty at 51-31 by the 7:00 mark of the third period and by the end of the third period that lead was extended to 59-35.  The GAC Black team was rolling by this point; up 66-43 midway through the fourth period enroute to an easy victory......It was a very similar story going on over on Court 2 between another pair of MIAC rivals that had the St. Olaf team taking on the CSB team which continues to impress in this year's Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League.  Both teams would struggle out of the gate initially; with the St. Olaf team taking a 2-0 lead early on in the first period but the CSB team would have the contest tied at two a piece by the 6:15 mark.  It didn't take too long, however, for the CSB team to break out of its initial funk as they would build a 13-6 advantage and although the St. Olaf team would trim the deficit down to four at 13-9 by the end of the first period, momentum clearly seemed to be with the CSB team.  That was demonstrated even more as the CSB team would hold a 17-11 lead by the 6:46 mark of the second period and with 3:45 left in the second period the CSB team had established a double-digit cushion up 22-11.  And a 7-0 push by the CSB team down the stretch of this second period gave them an almost insurmountable 29-11 lead by the halftime break.  By the 7:45 mark of the third period, the CSB team doubled up the St. Olaf team with a 32-16 advantage and by the end of the third period the CSB team was up safely 44-20.  The CSB team had it in cruise control the rest of the way, enjoying a 56-29 lead midway through the fourth period to get another easy win......However, it was a much, much different story over on Court 3 as yet another pair of MIAC rivals stood toe-to-toe with the Augsburg team taking on the Bethel team.  The latter would hold the upper hand in this one early on as the Bethel team would be up 8-5 at the 7:00 mark of the opening period and they would get the lead stretched out a bit at 12-7 by the midway point of the first period.  The Augsburg team would get back to within a single possession down 18-15 late in the first period but a tough finish in the paint by sophomore-to-be Courtney Nuest re-established the five-point edge for the Bethel team up 20-15 at the end of the first period.  But the Augsburg team wasn't going to be held down for long, however, as they made a push at the beginning of the second period to close the gap to one at 22-21 at the 6:15 mark and the Augsburg team would soon push its nose out in front 23-22 a bit later.  Then a lay-up in transition by willowy senior-to-be Jaley Coplin had the Augsburg team up 27-22 with 3:40 left in the second period.  The Bethel team would mount a comeback of its own; forging a 27-all tie with 1:25 left and this game would be leveled at 29-all at the halftime break.  Neither side was willing to give any ground once the third period got underway with things still deadlocked at 33 midway through the third period and although the Bethel team would be clinging to a 43-42 advantage by the end of the third period, the Augsburg team would take the lead right back at 44-43 early on in the fourth period.  This back and forth affair continued through the fourth period and with 1:50 left in regulation, the game would be tied again at 51 a piece.  It was at this point that the Bethel team was able to counter with two quick scores to get a 55-51 advantage but the Augsburg team would soon get a "3" to go down that closed the gap to one point again.  The Augsburg team would have one last chance to pull off some late-game heroics but a late shot attempts failed to go down as the Augsburg team went down in heartbreaking fashion for the second straight with the Bethel team escaping with the narrow victory.  

In the 7:00 P.M. slot over on Court 1, an interesting battle was underway between the GAC Gold team and the UW-River Falls team.  The UW-River Falls team would hold an early 8-6 lead in the opening period but that all changed as the GAC Gold team caught a bit of fire when junior-to-be Lexi Schermann drained a "3" to push the GAC Gold team out in front by a 9-8 count and by the end of the first period, the GAC Gold team had stretched its lead to 22-12.  By the midway point of the second period, the GAC Gold team had doubled-up its opponent with a 34-17 advantage and by the halftime break, the GAC Gold team was cruising up 45-23.  Not much would change during the third period with the GAC Gold team up 55-32 midway through the third period and by the end of the third period the GAC Gold team was still enjoying a 57-39 advantage.  To their credit, the UW-River Falls team battled back from a near-hopeless situation to cut the deficit down to ten at 62-52 with 3:00 left in the fourth period but they could never get any closer than that as the GAC Gold team got the "W"......On Court 2, The Melting Pots team was taking on another team that has been very impressive thus far - the Old But Not That Old team.  Things would be close early on in this one as the Old But Not That Old team would hold a slim 13-12 advantage midway through the opening period but The Melting Pots team would strike back with a three-point bomb a bit later to poke their nose out in front by a 15-13 count.  The Old team would come right back and regain the lead at 19-7 by the end of the first period but things would still stay tight throughout much of the second period but in the home stretch before the halftime break, the Old But Not That Old team made a decisive push that had them up 28-22 and a tough, left-handed lay-up by former UST standout Madi Radtke maintained this six-point edge as the Old But Not That Old team enjoyed a 35-29 advantage by the halftime break.  The Old But Not That Old team would grow its lead to 47-33 midway through the third period  and a Radtke finish in transition late in this third period now had the Old But Not That Old Team up safely 57-39 by the end of the third period.  The Old But Not That Old team would maintain this cushion throughout the fourth period; enjoying a 63-41 lead in the latter stages enroute to an easy win......One team that came into this Wednesday night looking for some redemption after a horrendous showing on Tuesday night was the St. Kate's team but they would have their work cut out for them again on this night as they would be taking on a very good MIAC rival in the Hamline team over on Court 3.  Indeed, the Hamline team would hold a 6-2 advantage midway through the first period but by the midway point of the second period, the St. Kate's team had whittled that deficit down to one at 11-10.  Still, the Hamline team was able to establish a bit more breathing room up 13-10 at the halftime break in what was proving to be a low-scoring affair dominated by tough defense on both sides.  The St. Kate's team would get this one leveled at 15 midway through the third period and a momentary lapse by the Hamline team allowed the St. Kate's team to pounce on the opportunity as they would get two quick scores to grab a 19-15 advantage a bit later.  The St. Kate's team would hold onto this four-point edge up 22-18 by the end of the third period and they would get some more breathing room up 24-18 early on in the fourth period.  The St. Kate's team would be clinging to a somewhat precarious 26-23 with 1:50 left and although they would add one free throw, the Hamline team would soon close the gap to one on a three-point bomb with 1:20 left.  But the St. Kate's team would hold firm when it counted and got a hard-earned victory.

Had to head home before the 7:40 P.M. games got going to get some extra rest on this night.  Another Tuesday-Wednesday night outing at the Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League so make sure you get down to catch all the action.

On Court 1 during the 6:15 P.M. slot, the GAC Alumni team got off to a solid start against the Northwestern team; building a 5-1 lead by the 7:11 mark of the opening period; stretching it to 16-9 in the latter stages of the first period and up 20-12 by the end of the first period.  But the Northwestern team would slyly pick away at this deficit; cutting it down to six at 26-20 by the midway point of the second period a a three-point bomb would bring them back to within a single possession down 26-23 a short time later.  The GAC Alumni team would get some more breathing room up 29-23 by the halftime break and they would maintain this six-point edge at 31-25 on a short, turnaround jumper by Miranda Rice (GAC '18) at the 7:35 mark of the third period and subsequent scores by both Rice and Emee Udo (GAC '18) had the GAC Alumni team in good shape again up by nine at 45-36 by the end of the third period.  But the Northwestern team would make another run once the fourth period got underway and by the 6:33 mark the GAC Alumni team's lead was shaved down to six points at 50-44 and two quick scores by the Northwestern team - a three-point bomb along with a steal and lay-up the other way - had them right on the brink down 50-49 at the 5:50 mark with a ton of time left.  But the GAC Alumni team never panicked and held firm; holding a 54-51 lead with 2:20 left and getting the seven-point win at the end in a very hard-fought contest......No such drama over on Court 2 that had the St. Olaf team going up against the Bethel team as the latter started running away with this one early on; building a 12-2 advantage by the 6:11 mark of the 1st period and holding a sizable 21-8 lead by the end of the first period.  By the midway point of the second period, the Bethel team's lead ballooned to 33-12 and they maintained this cushion as they enjoyed at 37-16 advantage by the halftime break.  By the midway point of the third period, things appeared to be pretty much academic with Bethel up 50-22 and things would get even worse for the St. Olaf team as a lay-up in transition by sophomore-to-be Courtney Nuest bulged the Bethel team's lead to 62-24 by the end of the third period as the Bethel team rolled to an easy win......Another pair of MIAC rivals were going at it on Court 3 during this time slot as well as the GAC Gold team got out to an 8-3 advantage on the Macalester team by the 7:11 mark of the opening period but the Macalester team would hang tough and would stay right in the thick of things down only 13-11 by the end of the first period.  But the GAC Gold team would slowly but surely increase its advantage once the second period got going.  A score in the paint by junior-to-be Emma Kniefel helped extend the GAC Gold team's lead to 17-11 early on in the second period and in the latter stages of the second period, the GAC Gold team had extended its lead to 27-19 and a late 5-0 push down the stretch had the GAC Gold team up comfortably at 32-19.  The GAC Gold team maintained this cushion up 37-23 midway through the third period and an offensive rebound and putback by sophomore-to-be Morgan Kelly stretched the lead to 42-23 with the GAC Gold team in full control.  The GAC Gold team would enjoy a 52-31 lead early on in the fourth period and although the Macalester team was able to trim some of the fat off of the deficit during the remainder of the game, the GAC Gold team would still win this one comfortably.  

Another blowout victory would take place on Court 1 during the 7:00 P.M. slot in a game between The Melting Pots team and the Midwest Basketball team.  Although the Midwest Basketball team would be up 11-6 midway through the opening period and would enjoy a 25-17 lead by the end of the first period, this one at least seemed to be a game.  But the Melting Pots team was unable to hold up its end of the bargain once the second period got going as the Midwest Basketball team started running away with things; building their lead to 38-23 in the latter stages of the second period and up 40-29 at the half.  The Midwest Basketball team would by up 44-32 early on in the third period; not that huge of a margin but they would soon stretch their lead to 61-44 by the end of the third period.  By the midway point of the fourth period, the Midwest Basketball team maintained this seventeen-point edge up 65-48 and they would get the blowout win in the end.....Probably one of the two best games of the evening took place on Court 2 during this time slot in a MIAC/WIAC clash of sorts that saw the Hamline team taking on the UW-River Falls team.  The Hamline team would have the upper hand in this to begin with as they would hold a 5-0 lead early on in the opening period and would hold a 13-9 advantage with 3:57 left in the first period and get a bit more breathing room up 17-12 by the end of the first period.  But the UW-River Falls team would soon go to work once the second period got underway; reducing the deficit to three at 20-17 early on in the second period and cutting it to two point at 22-20 by the midway point of the second period.  Soon thereafter, the UW-River Falls team would embark on a 5-0 push that had them out in front by a 25-22 count late in the second period and they would enjoy this three-point edge up 29-26 by the halftime break.  A three-point bomb allowed the UW-River Falls team to stretch its lead to 32-26 early on in the third period and although the Hamline team would manage to soon get back to within a single possession, the UW-River Falls team still had a 43-40 edge midway through the third period and they would maintain that three-point lead up 50-47 at the end of the third period.  The UW-River Falls team would see its lead shrink to 52-51 early on in the fourth period and they would still be clinging to a precarious one-point lead up 54-53 with 4:42 left in regulation.  With 2:00 left, the UW-River Falls team would still hold a 55-53 advantage but the Hamline team knew it was now or never and they managed to get two tough scores down the stretch to take a thrilling 57-56 victory......One team that keeps impressing so far is the Old But Not That Old team and they would put on another display of how good they are over on Court 3 during this time slot; taking on the Carleton team.  The Old But Not That Old team would jump out to a 7-0 lead by the 6:50 mark of the opening period but the Carleton team would show some spunk and get the deficit down to just one at 11-10 with 2:00 left in this first period.  But it was here that the Old But Not That Old team really showed its worth as they reeled of a 10-2 run to enjoy a 21-12 advantage by the end of the first period.  The Old But Not That Old team was still in very good shape up 27-14 midway through the second period but this tricky Carleton team would manage to tighten things up as this second period progressed and by the halftime break things were looking substantially brighter with them facing a somewhat manageable six-point deficit down 32-26.  And things still looked doable for the Carleton team as they stayed in that six-point range down 34-28 early on in the third period but the Old But Not That Old Team soon shut the door on this comeback attempt by the youngsters as a quick 5-0 push had them up 39-28 by the 6:30 mark of the third period and a three-point bomb by former UST standout Madi Radtke would help the Old But Not That Old team grow its lead to 45-31 with 4:50 left in the third period and they would enjoy a 53-38 advantage by the end of the third period.  The Old But Not That Old team would have things in cruise control the rest of the way; up 61-46 in the latter stages of the fourth period; enroute to the victory.  

Another big-time blowout win would take place on Court 1 in the 7:40 P.M. slot as two more MIAC rivals faced off with the CSB team taking on the St. Kate's team.  So while the CSB team has looked impressive thus far, this Tuesday night was a night where the St. Kate's team might've wished they had taken a stroll over to MOA for some shopping or some other fun activity as they walked into a buzzsaw on this night.  The CSB team would build a 9-2 advantage midway through the first period and although a tough score in the paint by fifth-year senior-to-be Sam Orth that drew a foul with the obligatory "and one", the St. Kate's team just couldn't seem to get it going on this evening as the CSB team would hold an 18-6 advantage by the end of the first period.  The CSB team would gradually grow its lead to 27-10 midway through the second period and they would enjoy a 29-14 advantage at the half.  By the midway point of the third period, the CSB team was cruising; up 34-17 and a 13-0 run would increase that lead to 47-17 by the end of the third period.  The St. Kate's team's struggles would continue well into the fourth period with the CSB team up 55-17 and they would allow only ONE score by the St. Kate's team down the stretch in the blowout victory......Meanwhile, on nearby Court 2 a much different game was shaping up between two other MIAC rivals as the GAC Black team faced off against the Augsburg team in something of a rematch of this last season's MIAC Championship Game.  And it was no surprise at all as this one would be close throughout as the Augsburg team would hold a slim 10-9 advantage midway through the opening period but the GAC Black team would find themselves out in front at 17-15 by the end of the first period in this back-and-forth affair.  The GAC Black would still enjoy an 18-17 advantage early on in the second period but then the Augsburg team would suddenly catch some fire as they would retake the lead at 19-18 and would extend that lead to 27-20 with 2:30 left in the second period.  A big three-point bomb helped the Augsburg team grow its lead to 32-23 at the half and the GAC Black team appeared to be in a heap of trouble.  Perhaps alarmed, the GAC Black team embarked on a 5-0 push that allowed them to cut the deficit down to four at 32-28 early on in the third period but the Augsburg team would step on the gas pedal again and a trademark three-point bomb by senior-to-be Jaley Coplin helped Augsburg gain a ten-point cushion up 38-28 with 4:10 left in the third period.  Although the GAC Black team would get the deficit reduced to five at 38-33 by the end of the third period, it still looked like an uphill battle for them.  But by the midway point of the fourth period, the tide had turned as the GAC Black team would get this one evened up and they would get out of Dodge with a come-from-behind victory......An interesting battle was taking place over on Court 3 between the Guards Of The Galaxy team and the Concordia St Paul team.  The Concordia St Paul team would certainly get off to the kind of start they had hoped for; building a 7-4 advantage by the midway point of the opening period and a 16-6 advantage by the end of the first period.  Things continued to look good in the early stages of the second period for the Concordia St Paul team but it wasn't long before the Guards Of the Galaxy team finally caught fire that enabled them to make a big run down the stretch of the second period to grab an unexpected 24-22 lead by the halftime break.  A two-point deficit shouldn't have fazed the Concordia St Paul team that much but they were unable to find the magic that they had enjoyed early on in this contest which effectively opened the door for the Guards Of The Galaxy team to consolidate on its lead and Alison Hinck (GAC '20) played a big role as she would bang home a "3" to extend the lead to 27-22 early on in the third period and a subsequent Hinck jumper soon thereafter maintained the five-point edge at 29-24.  By the latter stages of the third period, the Guards Of The Galaxy team was starting to run away with things up 44-28 and they would still be up double-digits at 47-35 by the end of the third period.  The Concordia St Paul team would not give up, however, and managed to get on a bit of a run that had the deficit cut to six at 47-41 but they would soon run out of gas as the Guards Of The Galaxy team would increase its lead to double-digits again up 54-43 by the 6:05 mark and were never threatened again.  

Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League Results For Wednesday 6-8-22

 Another busy night at the Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League on this Wednesday night.  Here's the results of what I was able to catch:

So while there wasn't a lot drama-wise on this night, there was still some very good action to watch.  In the 6:15 P.M. slot over on Court 1, two familiar MIAC rivals - the Macalester team and the Hamline team - faced off against each other.  The Macalester team would get off to a decent enough start in this one as a three-point bomb had them up 5-4 early on in the opening period but it didn't take too long for the Hamline team to start finding its groove as they would soon get things leveled and then bolt out in front to hold a 17-11 lead late in the first period.  The Macalester team would get the deficit trimmed down to four points at 17-13 by the end of the first period but the Hamline team would kick it into high gear again as they would expand their lead and a three-point bomb would put them up 28-15 midway through the second period and by the halftime break, the Hamline team was enjoying a 34-22 advantage.  The Hamline team would continue to pour it on once the third period got underway and would increase its lead to 48-27midway through the third period and by the end of the third period, the Hamline team was rolling along up 59-30.  The Hamline team would continue to run away with things up 77-41 down the stretch of the fourth period as they cruised to an easy win.  It was much the same story over on Court two that had the Midwest Basketball team going up against the Carleton team.  The Midwest Basketball team would get out to a 4-0 lead early on and hold a 16-4 lead by the end of the first period.  The Carleton team would slowly try and fight its way out of this hole and would manage to crawl back to within single digits down 26-18 late in the second period but the Midwest Basketball team would get a big boost soon thereafter on a three-point bomb that widened their lead back to double-digits again at 29-18 but a resourceful Carleton team would not back down and continued to claw back and by the halftime break, hope seemed to spring eternal for them down by just four at 29-25.  But unfortunately for the Carleton team, they weren't able to sustain this momentum that got them close once the third period got underway as the Midwest Basketball team slowly but surely built up its lead again and held a 39-31 advantage late in the third period and upped that lead to double-digits again at 44-33 by the end of the third period.  The Midwest Basketball team would increase its lead to fourteen at 47-33 near the midway point of the fourth period and that form would hold for them the rest of the way in their victory.  Meanwhile, over on Court 3, a MIAC/WIAC clash of sorts was taking place as the CSB team was taking on the UW-River Falls team.  The CSB team would come out of the gate on fire in this one; holding a 14-4 lead early on in the opening period and owning a 20-6 advantage midway through the first period.  But the CSB team was hardly satisfied and their lead continued to balloon and by the end of the first period, they were up by four touchdowns at 35-7.  The UW-River Falls team, which struggled mightily early on, finally found some semblance of offense in the second period but they were already fighting an uphill battle and by the halftime break, the UW-River Falls team was still staring at a twenty-three point deficit at 46-23.  The UW-River Falls team would manage to get the deficit down to fifteen down 51-36 midway through the third period but bringing this one all the way back was a forgone conclusion as the CSB team would up its lead to 63-45 early on in the fourt period as they rolled to victory.  

In the 7:00 P.M. slot, a good one was brewing on Court 1 between the GAC Black team and the Galaxy Of The Guards team.  A three-point bomb by Alison Hinck (GAC '20) had the Galaxy Of The Guards team up 4-2 midway through the first period and they would enjoy an 8-3 advantage with 4:40 left in this opening period.  But it didn't take long for the GAC Black team to get things rolling on their end as they would quickly even things up and eventually poke their nose out in front.  A "3" that found nothing but cotton by senior-to-be Anna Sanders shortly before the buzzer sounded had the GAC Black team up 15-10 by the end of the first period.  The Galaxy Of The Guards team was unable to match this sudden burst and by the midway point of the second period, the GAC Black team extended its lead to 25-17 and they would still enjoy this eight-point advantage at 34-26 by the halftime break.  By the time the third period got underway, the Galaxy Of The Guards team found themselves in even deeper trouble as the the GAC Black team extended its lead to 48-33 midway through the third period and by the midway point of the fourth period, the GAC Black lead had grown even more by a 64-45 mark as they would hold on down the home stretch for the win.  Another interesting contest was taking place over on Court 2 between the GAC Gold team and the Northwestern team.  Things would be tight early on in this game with the score knotted at 11 midway through the first period but a three-point bomb by sophomore-to-be and former Maple Grove standout Kylie Baranick pushed the GAC Gold out in front 14-11 a bit later.  The Northwestern team would come right back, however, and snare the lead back at 15-14 with 4:00 left in the opening period and they would continue to hold the edge up 20-18 late in the first period but the GAC Gold team would turn the tables on them; going on a very late 4-0 burst to own a 22-18 advantage by the end of the first period.  Undaunted, the Northwestern team would have an answer of its own as they would take the lead right back once the second period got underway and by the midway point of the second period, the Northwestern team would hold a 29-24 advantage.  But just as they did earlier, the GAC Gold team would answer the bell again as they would soon reduce the deficit to a scant point at 33-32 late in the second period and put on a very late 5-0 spurt that earned them a 37-33 lead by the halftime break.  The Northwestern team was hoping that the pattern of them coming back would continue but the GAC Gold team would instead increase its lead as the third period got going and by the end of the third period, the GAC Gold team now had a double-digit cushion up 56-45.  The GAC Gold would maintain this cushion once the fourth period got going; up 60-50 midway through the fourth period enroute to the win.  Another interesting battle was ensuing over on Court 3 between the Concordia St Paul team and the Melting Pots team.  The Concordia St Paul team would have the upper hand in this one early on; grabbing a 6-3 lead but the Melting Pots would soon have this one leveled at eight a piece by the 6:20 mark of the opening period.  Things would stay tight for the rest of this first period with the Concordia St Paul team owning a slim 18-15 advantage.  The Melting Pots team would stay right in the thick of things throughout the second period; still finding themselves down by just three at 20-17 in the latter stages of the second period and they would cut that deficit down to just two at 24-22 by the halftime break.  But things would quickly go south for the Melting Pots team once the third period got underway as the Concordia St Paul team started taking control of things and by the latter stages of the third period the Concordia St Paul team enjoyed a 33-26 advantage.  By the fourth period, the Concordia St Paul team started pulling away for good as they earned a double-digit victory.  

In the 7:40 P.M. slot on Court 1, the Old But Not That Old team was taking on the Augsburg team and although the Augsburg team would enjoy a 7-4 advantage midway through the opening period, the Old But Not That Old team would shrug off its initial sluggishness and quickly get the game tied at seven.  They would hold the Augsburg team scoreless down the stretch of this opening period and embark on an 11-0 run of their own to own an 18-7 lead at the end of the first period.  Things would continue to deteriorate for the Augsburg team as the Old But Not That Old team would increase its lead to double-digits and enjoy a 26-11 lead late in the second period and 30-18 by the halftime break.  The Augsburg team would try to make inroads once the third period got going but it was a lot like trying to bail water from a sinking boat as they still found themselves down 47-37 late in the third period and by the end of the third period, the Old But Not That Old team had upped its cushion to fourteen at 53-39.  The Old But Not That Old team would up the lead to twenty at 65-45 midway through the fourth period as they rolled to victory.  The best game of this Wednesday night took place on Court 2 during this time slot between the St. Kate's team and the Bethel team.  The Bethel team had things going their way early on; up 3-2 early in the contest and enjoying an 11-6 advantage by the end of the first period.  A pretty drive and finish by sophomore-to-be and former Becker standout Courtney Nuest stretched the Bethel team's lead to 13-6 early on in the second period but just when the St. Kate's team appeared to be vulnerable, they hunkered down and brought this one back as they would get the game leveled at 17 with 2:50 left in the second period and they would manage to snare the lead away; enjoying a 21-18 advantage by the halftime break.  Things would be nip-and-tuck throughout the third period with neither side willing to give an inch.  The game would be deadlocked at 22 early on in the third period and tough defense by both teams still had this one tied at 24-all late in the third period.  The St. Kate's team seemingly got a bit of breathing room with a 27-24 lead but by the end of the third period, the Bethel team had cut that lead to just a scant point at 27-26.  It was the Bethel team's turn to try to open up some space once the fourth period got going and they would own a 31-27 advantage by the 6:30 mark of the fourth period.  But a 4-0 push by the St. Kate's team brought this game right back to Square One tied at 31 at the 5:20 mark.  The Bethel team would be clinging to a 33-32 lead but the St. Kate's team would again get this game tied up on one free throw by recent St. Kate's grad Sam Orth with 2:00 left.  The Bethel team would again take a small 35-33 lead with 1:45 left and although there was still a mountain of time left for the St. Kate's team to respond, their hopes of bringing this one back were dashed when a "3" by the Bethel team with 1:10 left upped their lead to 38-33 as the Bethel team escaped with an incredibly hard-fought and narrow victory.  I did get to catch some of the action on Court 3 in this time slot between the St. Olaf team and the GAC Alumni team but because games on Court 3 were running a bit late on this night, I had to leave before it was finished.  In any event, the GAC Alumni team would be up 8-2 midway through the first period but the St. Olaf team would tighten things up down the stretch of the opening period and found themselves down by just two at 14-12 by the end of the first period.  The St. Olaf team would get this one leveled at 14 a piece early on in the second period and things would stay tight for a while but the GAC Alumni team would use a late push down the stretch of the second period to give themselves a 34-24 lead by the halftime break.  Toward the latter stages of the third period, two free throws by Miranda Rice (GAC '18) maintained this ten-point edge for the GAC Alumni team up 52-42 when I had to head back home.

Don't forget that there will be games on both Tuesday night and Wednesday night (6-14 & 6-15) again this next week so make sure you get yourselves down to the Midtown YWCA to catch all the action!
