JCC Womens College Summer League Results For Monday 6-30-14

Here are the results of the games from tonight's session at the JCC Womens College Summer League:

6:00 P.M.

Anoka-Ramsey - 54
Augsburg #2 - 42

6:55

St. Kate's Yellow - 40
SMSU - 34

7:50

SDSM&T - 61
St. Kate's Purple - 49

In the 6:00 P.M. game, the Anoka-Ramsey team bolted out to a sizable lead in the first half and, despite the fact that the Augsburg #2 team was able to make some inroads on the deficit in the second half, Anoka-Ramsey still won comfortably enough.  Best game of the night was easily the 6:55 P.M. clash between the St. Kate's Yellow squad and the Southwest Minnesota State team.  The first half belonged to SMSU as they raced to a double-digit advantage but the St. Kate's Yellow team slowly worked their way back into the contest and cut the deficit to a scant three points at the half; trailing only 22-19.  The St. Kate's Yellow squad eventually was able to build some small leads in the second half but never had much in the way of breathing room and, late in the contest, they were clinging to a 36-34 advantage.  The SMSU team had several opportunities to either tie or reclaim the lead in the last two minutes but every chance they had seemed to slip through their fingers.  Senior-to-be Jenna Mistler played a big role in the second half for the St. Kate's Yellow team as they held on for the 40-34 victory.  In the nightcap, the SDSM&T (South Dakota School of Mines and Technology) cruised to a 61-49 win over the St. Kate's Purple squad.  Laura Kolander; who played her HS basketball at West Lutheran and is a junior-to-be at Concordia (Wisconsin), played a big role in SDSM&T's win on this night; getting several points in the paint.  The Clark twins (Meg and Audra); freshmen-to be at St. Kate's, were impressive in this contest despite the loss and St. Kate's got two gems in this pair.

Midtown YWCA Womens College Summer League Results For Wednesday 6-25-14

Here are the results of the games I was able to catch tonight at the Midtown YWCA Womens College Summer League:

5:00 P.M. Games

St. Olaf - 41
GAC Gold - 25

Royals - 54
Golden Eagles - 44

5:55 P.M. Games

AR Alumni - 43
St. Olaf - 27

GAC Black - 38
GAC Alum + 1 - 36

6:50 P.M. Games

Winona State - 58
Bemidji State - 26

Phatties - 60
Macalester - 40

7:45 P.M. Games

Winona State - 47
Concordia St. Paul - 38

MN Black Ice - 80
Mayville State - 57

The Bethel team (Royals) continue to look very solid as they upended a very good Golden Eagles team by ten in the 5:00 P.M. slot.  St. Olaf, doing double-duty on this evening, took care of the GAC Gold team in the 5:00 P.M. slot but then dropped a 43-27 decision to the Anoka-Ramsey Alumni team in the 5:55 P.M. slot.  Best game of the evening by far was the clash between current and former Gusties as the GAC Black team edged the GAC Alum +1 team 38-36.  With the score tied at 34 late in the game,  Gustavus junior to be Lindsey Johnson knocked down a short jumper from the left baseline to break the tie and two insurance freebies made it a two possession game a bit later.  Former Gustie point guard Bri Radtke got a lay-up with scant seconds left to trim the deficit to two points for the Alumni team but it wasn't enough as the GAC Black team held on for the win.  The Winona State team looked very good tonight; particularly junior to be Connor Nagle who knocked down several "3's" in their romp over Bemidji State in the 6:50 P.M. slot.  The Warriors; doing double-duty on this night as well, then used a balanced attack in holding off Concordia St. Paul in the 7:45 P.M. slot.

No games this next week during 4th of July week but action resumes again on Wednesday evening July 9th.

Midtown YWCA Womens College Summer League Results For Wednesday 6-18-14

Here are the results of the games I was able to catch tonight at the Midtown YWCA Womens College Summer League:

5:00 P.M. Games

GAC Black - 65
Macalester - 35

Phatties - 45
Mayville State - 23

5:55 P.M. Games

Concordia St. Paul - 52
GAC Gold - 33

Royals - 53
AR Alumni - 28

6:50 P.M. Games

Northern State - 46
Big Pipes - 37

Royals - 42
CSB - 39

7:45 P.M. Games

Northern State - 46
SMU - 34

Golden Eagles - 32
GAC Gold - 22

A couple of good games in the 6:50 P.M. slot.  Northern State seemingly had their game against the Big Pipes team in the bag but a late surge by the Pipes; comprised mainly of former Hamline players, got to within three points late but could not get any closer.  A very entertaining game between the Royals team (Bethel) and the CSB squad saw the Royals eek out a three point win.  Former Bethel standout (as well as former MIAC MVP) Taylor Sheley helped out her alma mater on this night as the Royals did double duty in the 5:55 and 6:50 slots and got wins in both games.

Midtown YWCA Womens College Summer League Results For Tuesday 6-17-14

Here are the results of the games I was able to catch tonight over at the Midtown YWCA Womens College Summer League:

5:00 P.M. Games

Royals - 51
GAC Gold - 41

Phatties - 33
GAC Alum + 1 - 30

5:55 P.M. Games

Northern State - 50
Bemidji State - 27

Golden Eagles - 49
Macalester - 43

6:50 P.M. Games

Concordia St. Paul - 42
Big Pipes - 30

GAC Black - 45
SMU - 42

7:45 P.M. Games

MN Black Ice - 64
St. Olaf - 36

CSB - 43
AR Alumni - 26

One good one in the 5:00 P.M. slot as the Phatties team held off a strong challenge from the Gustavus Alumni team whose chances may have been hurt when Bri Radtke went down with an injury late.  The Golden Eagles team looked very solid in their 49-43 win over Macalester (only wish I knew the players names - can someone help me here?) as did Northern State as they rolled over Bemidji State.  The other tight one was the clash between SMU and the Gustavus Black team as the Cardinals nearly overcame a deficit they faced throughout the second half but fell short.

Games will be going on over at the Midtown YWCA tomorrow night as well and I'll be over there to get the action I can.

Hudson YMCA Womens College Summer Leage Results For Sunday 6-15-14

When I had said in one of my earlier posts that there were now two summer leagues to watch, I lied.  There's actually THREE summer leagues going on this summer and late this afternoon I ventured across the St. Croix River over to the land of Packer fans and cheese to the YMCA in Hudson Wisconsin for the opening of the new summer league there.  I only got to take in three games but hopefully will be able to catch a little more action over there the next time around.  Anyway, here's what I was able to get:

4:00 P.M. Game

UST #1 - 77
Hamline #1 - 17

As you can tell, not much of a contest as Hamline struggled all game long to find any sense of offensive cohesiveness and was plagued by numerous turnovers and other mistakes.  The Tommies were led by Maggie Weiers in this one who seemed nearly unstoppable at times.

5:00 P.M. Game

UST #1 - 66
St. Kate's - 52

The Wildcats gave the UST #1 team a much better game in the 5:00 P.M. slot; falling 66-52 but after trailing 36-21 at halftime, the 'Cats got their act together and managed to get to within ten on a couple of occasions in the second half.  Weiers again had a big part in the Tommies win in this one and lefty Hannah Hughes also contributed as well.  Despite tweaking her ankle, St. Kate's Brittany Ward was able to knock down a couple of "3's" to help the Wildcat effort.  La Shay Holt also had a big second half for the Wildcats.

6:00 P.M. Game

St. Kate's - 59
UW- Superior - 47

The Wildcats were able to bounce back from the defeat in the 5:00 P.M. slot to notch a victory over UW-Superior.  St. Kate's was able to get a 36-21 halftime lead and managed to push the lead to nearly twenty in the early part of the second half before the Yellowjackets were able to mount something of a comeback to slice the deficit.  UW-Superior got to within ten on two occasions coming down the stretch but could never get any closer despite several opportunities.  St. Kate's got contributions from several players in this one.  Alexis Garcia, the Clark twins (Audra and Meg), Holt, and Ward had good moments for the Wildcats in this one.

Midtown YWCA Womens College Summer League Results For Wednesday 6-11-14

Here are the results of the games I was able to catch on this Wednesday night over at the Midtown YWCA Womens College Summer League:

5:00 P.M. Game

CSB - 49
Macalester - 44

5:55 P.M. Games

St. Olaf - 36
Mayville State - 32

Winona State - 62
SMU - 25

6:50 P.M. Games

Winona State - 50
Northern State - 31

Concordia St. Paul - 49
Bemidji State - 34

7:45 P.M. Games

Golden Eagles - 47
Mayville State - 36

Royals - 35
AR Alumni - 32

Best game of the night was arguably in the 7:45 P.M. slot between the Bethel team (Royals) and the Anoka-Ramsey Alumni team.  Things were very close; very tight throughout.  The Anoka-Ramsey Alumni squandered several late opportunities to either tie or go ahead and the Royals team hung on for the win.  The Macalester team did a great job against CSB with only four players but came up short in the end in the 5:00 P.M. slot.  St. Olaf looked solid in their win over Mayville State in the 5:55 P.M. slot and they got contributions from both current and recent former players; particularly Maddie Ehrich.  Playing two games in one evening didn't seem to bother the Winona State team as they rolled to easy victories in each of their games.  I didn't get to stay for the 8:40 games on this night but hopefully that'll change next week.

Midtown YWCA Womens College Summer League Results For Tuesday 6-10-14

Here are the results of the games I was able to catch on the opening night of the Midtown YWCA Womens College Summer League:

5:00 P.M. Games

SMU - 59
Bemidji State - 46

Northern State - 41
Concordia St. Paul - 36

5:55 P.M. Game

Royals - 47
Macalester - 26

6:50 P.M. Games

St. Olaf - 35
SMU - 32

Phatties - 36
CSB - 23

7:45 P.M. Games

MN Black Ice - 49
Big Pipes - 31

Golden Eagles - 53
GAC Alum + 1 - 34

Game of the night was easily the tilt between MIAC rivals St. Olaf and SMU.  The Cardinals; who had to double on this night, won their first game in the 5:00 P.M. slot handily enough but the hour or so layover to the 6:50 P.M. slot must have left them a bit sluggish as the Oles built a lead in this one and looked to be in control.  SMU, however, put on a furious late comeback that ultimately fell three points short.  Newcomer Molly O'Toole; fresh out of Hopkins High School, had a solid night for the SMU team.  Recent Concordia St. Paul grad Rachel Hansen also had an excellent game on this night as she helped the Phatties team knock off a young CSB team.  The 8:40 game between Anoka-Ramsey Alumni and Mayville State looked to be a good one and the Anoka-Ramsey Alumni team held a slim 34-30 edge at the half when I had to leave.

There will be a round of action tomorrow night (Wednesday 6-11) and you know I'll be there.

Womens College Summer League Is Upon Us

Tuesday evening (6-10) kicks off yet another Midtown YWCA Womens Basketball Summer League that I'll be attending to get the scores and hopefully some interesting tidbits as well.  And if that wasn't enough, it seems as though there's another summer league that's starting up this week - over at the Sabes Jewish Community Center on Cedar Lake Road in St. Louis Park.  I'll be checking that one out as well although I'm still awaiting some of the specifics on the league.  In any event, it's definitely going to be an interesting - and busy - summer!
