JCC Women's College Summer League Playoff Results For Monday 7-27-15

Here are the results of the two playoff games held on Monday night at the JCC Women's College Summer League:

5:30 P.M. Game

GAC Gold - 51
GAC Alumni - 47

This was a very close game from the opening tip with neither side able to establish any real advantage.  The Gustie Alumni team held a precarious one-point lead at the half at 28-27 but you had to wonder when the Alumni team; with no reserves on the bench on this night, might run out of gas.  Near the 7:00 mark of the second half, it happened as the young ones on GAC Gold team proceeded to go on a key 6-0 run that really changed the complexion of things.  But the Alumni squad had one last gasp left in them in the final two minutes to get back to within a single possession but could never quite bring it all back; falling to the GAC Gold squad as they advance into next week's action.

6:25 P.M. Game

Northern State - 53
Uptown Dunk You Up - 47

I honestly had expected this one to be a runaway considering the lumps the Uptown Dunk You Up squad has absorbed this summer.  So when the Northern State squad jumped out to an early lead I pretty much figured it might be a good time to start checking out things on my cell phone.  So imagine my surprise when the Uptown Dunk You Up squad managed to fight their way right back into the thick of things and stay close with the bigger Northern State squad.  Still, the Wolves managed to use a late run in the first half to build a 32-21 lead and they held a relatively safe cushion for much of the second half.  The Uptown Dunk You Up squad had one last burst in them to throw a late scare into the heavily favored Northern State squad but the Wolves managed to hold on when it counted; getting the 53-47 victory.

So in next Monday night's finale, the GAC Gold team will go up against the GAC Alumni + A Few team while in the other semifinal at 6:20 the Northern State squad will face the GAC Black squad with the winners squaring off at 7:50 P.M. for the Championship game.

Midtown YWCA Womens College Summer League Playoff Results For Wednesday 7-22-15

Here are the results of the opening round of playoff games at the Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League that I was able to catch this last Wednesday night.  Again, I apologize for the delay in getting this in.

5:00 P.M. Games

UST Purple - 55
Royals - 48

Northern State - 56
CSB - 40

5:55 P.M. Games

Hoops, I Did It Again - 49
UST Black - 34

Phatties - 41
Golden Eagle Alumni - 35

6:50 P.M. Games

Augsburg #1 - 38
Hamline - 36

Warriors - 98
Anoka-Ramsey - 40

7:45 P.M. Games

Concordia St. Paul - 42
Augsburg #1 - 36

B Ballers - 68
Warriors - 37

In the 5:55 P.M. slot, the UST Purple squad was able to hold off a stern challenge from the Royals (Bethel) squad in what is shaping up to be a big rivalry in the MIAC while Northern State methodically took care of business against the CSB Blazers.  In the 5:55 P.M. slot, the UST Black squad was not as fortunate as their sister squad; the Purple team, as they fell to a very athletic and speedy Hoops, I Did It Again team.  The real interesting contest in this time slot, however, was the game that pitted the Phatties squad against the Golden Eagle Alumni team which has always done well in this summer league.  Things were nip and and tuck in this one from the opening tip-off but in the second half, the Phatties were able to use their big bodies to dominate the glass and they eventually pulled off a tough 41-35 victory......While the Warriors rolled to an easy 98-40 win over Anoka-Ramsey, the other game in the 6:50 P.M. slot was a doozy to be sure between the Augsburg #1 team and conference rival Hamline that saw the Auggies escape with a 38-36 thriller.  But there was no time for the Augsburg #1 team to celebrate as they had to go right back into action in the 7:45 P.M. slot; this time against NSIC powerhouse Concordia St. Paul.  It looked as if the Golden Bears initially might be able to build a bit of a lead but a resourceful Augsburg #1 team got a second wind and battled their way right back into the thick of things late.  But the Augsburg #1 team couldn't quite get over the hump when it counted and Concordia St. Paul survived with a 42-36 victory.

Warriors - 53
St. Olaf - 49

5 :55 P.M. Games

6:50 P.M. Games

UST Purple - 77

Hoops, I Did It Again - 45

7:45 P.M. Games

Anoka-Ramsey - 56
Augsburg #1 - 50

Phatties - 65
Hamline - 37

Bumper-to-bumper traffic on Highway 55 delayed my arrival at the Midtown YWCA late yesterday afternoon and I was afraid I'd miss out on the 5:00 P.M. games.  Luckily, I got inside to catch two exciting finishes in this time slot.  St. Olaf was holding a slim lead late on the Warriors squad but a series of late mistakes allowed the lead to slip through the fingers of the Oles and let the Warriors escape with an unlikely 53-49 win.  In the other contest, Northern State and Concordia were involved in a very tight contest and, with the game tied at 57, Concordia St. Paul had the ball with the final seconds ticking down.  Northern State, which should have let the Concordia St. Paul team take a tough, contested shot, inadvertently fouled instead with scant time left on the clock which allowed two free throws - both made as Concordia St. Paul snared a 59-57 victory.......In the 5:55 P.M. slot, the CSB squad made relatively easy work of Bethany in their game while Northern State, still smarting from the heartbreak in its earlier game, jumped out to a 12-0 lead on the UST Black team and appeared to be enroute to an easy win.  But the UST Black squad was able to chip away at the deficit and not only drew close but also grabbed a 31-29 lead at the half.  In the second half, Northern State appeared to get a second wind as they reclaimed the lead and momentum and it looked as if they had things pretty much sewn up but the UST Black squad had a late run left in them and they eventually tied the game at 47 with under a minute left.  But this time Northern State would make amends for its earlier defeat.  With time winding down, freshman-to-be Taylor Kane of Grand Rapids got loose in the right corner with the ball and, with one second left on the clock, she drilled a long jumper just inside the arc to give Northern State a dramatic 47-45 buzzer-beater win in what was easily the game of the night.....In the 6:50 P.M. slot, the UST Purple team throttled the Augsburg #2 team by 40 while the Royals team (Bethel) withstood a fine effort by Hoops, I Did It Again getting a slim 49-45 victory......In the 7:45 P.M. slot, the Phatties squad, led by a strong front line of Amber and Ashley Bray and an experienced former Concordia St. Paul standout Rachel Hansen, easily took down a young Hamline team while an equally young Anoka-Ramsey squad sprung a surprise; knocking off the Augsburg #1 team by a 56-50 margin.

Playoff action begins next week Wednesday (7-22) and I expect we'll see some very good games out of that so come on down to the Midtown YWCA to catch the action!

JCC Women's College Summer League Results For Monday 7-13-15

Here are the results of the games last night at the JCC Women's College Summer League:

5:30 P.M. Game

GAC Alumni - 55
Uptown Dunk You Up - 38

6:25 P.M. Game

GAC Black - 32
GAC Gold - 30

7:20 P.M. Game

GAC Alumni + A Few - 48
Northern State - 45

Considering how the Uptown Dunk You Up team has been on the wrong side of some rather one-sided contests this summer, I had pretty much expected the 5:30 game to be a yawner at best.  However, the Uptown Dunk You Up squad had some surprises on this night and gave the GAC Alumni squad a run for their money - at least in the first half anyway - trailing only 26-24 at the halftime break.  But the former Gusties were able to open up distance in the second half and cruised to a 55-38 win......A fun game in the 6:20 P.M. slot that pitted the two current GAC squads against each other.  This one was close all the way and the GAC Black squad had to stave off two desperation shots by the GAC Gold squad to preserve the narrow 32-30 victory......The highly-anticipated battle came in the 7:20 P.M. slot; a likely championship preview between the GAC Alumni + A Few team going up against Northern State.  While the Northern State team was without some of their regulars on this night, they managed to control most of the first half and held a 24-19 lead before the GAC Alumni + A Few team went on a very late 6-0 run to grab a 25-24 halftime lead.  The second half would be very close; very tight with the GAC Alumni + A Few team hanging on to a razor-thin lead for the most part.  Despite former Gustie standout Bri Radtke's two missed free throws late that would have provided an insurance margin, Northern State was unable to bring their comeback attempt all the way back as the GAC Alumni + A Few squad registered a nail-biting 48-45 victory.

Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League Results For Wednesday 7-8-15

Here are the results of the games I was able to catch from this last Wednesday night at the Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League:

5:00 P.M. Games

Concordia St. Paul - 85
Augsburg #2 - 38

Northern State - 58
Hamline 24

5:55 P.M. Games

Royals - 44
UST Purple - 39

Dream Team - 48
Winona State - 40

6:50 P.M. Games

Hoops, I Did It Again - 66
Bethany - 37

Augsburg #1 - 34
Golden Eagle Alumni - 32

7:45 P.M. Games

Winona State - 51
Phatties - 42

CSB - 43
UST Black - 32

NSIC rivals Concordia St. Paul and Northern State both earned easy victories in the 5:00 P.M. slot but the two games in the 5:55 P.M. slot made up for that as the Royals (Bethel) edged MIAC arch-rival UST Purple team in a very good contest and the Dream Team knocked off a very good Winona State squad in another good one.  While the Hoops, I Did It Again team got an easy win in the 6:50 P.M. slot, the Augsburg #1 team pulled off a bit of an upset in knocking off the Golden Eagle Alumni team by a 34-32 margin.  In the 7:45 P.M. slot, Winona State got a measure of redemption from the loss earlier in the evening by taking down a short-handed Phatties team while an improving CSB team knocked off the UST Black team in the other game.

The last week of regular season play is this coming Wednesday night (7-15) so come on down and take in the action before the playoffs start on Wednesday 7-22.

JCC Women's College Summer League Results For Monday 7-6-15

Again, I apologize for the lengthy delay in getting this in.  This last week was horrible and having my home computer out for repair right now is helping matters.  In any event, here are the results from action at the JCC Women's College Summer League from Monday 7-6-15

5:30 P.M. Game

Northern State - 80
Uptown Dunk You Up - 35

6:25 P.M. Game

GAC Gold - 51
GAC Alumni - 45

7:20 P.M. Game

GAC Alumni + A Few - 46
GAC Black - 41

Not much of a contest in the 5:30 P.M. slot as the Northern State team used its size and speed to dominate in an easy win.  A much different story, however, in the 6:25 and 7:20 P.M. slots as the four different Gustavus teams took aim at each other.  The GAC Gold team held a 27-22 lead at the half and managed to stave off a late comeback attempt by the GAC Alumni team to preserve a 51-45 victory.  A very entertaining game in the 7:20 P.M. slot as the GAC Alumni + A Few team slugged out a hard-fought 46-41 win over the youngsters on the GAC Black team after trailing 21-17 at the half.
