Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League Playoff Results For Wednesday 7-24-13

Here are the results of the opening round of playoffs at the Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League: 5:00 P.M. Games St. Olaf - 47 Augsburg - 17 St. Kate's Purple - 70 GAC #2 - 49 CSB - 40 GAC Alumni - 38 5:55 P.M. Games UW-River Falls - 54 St. Kate's Gold - 21 GAC #1 - 37 Anoka-Ramsey - 36 6:50 P.M. Games Macalester Basketball - 54 St. Olaf - 35 Hamline #2 - 39 St. Scholastica & Others - 34 ARCC Alumni - 42 CSB - 37 2 OT 7:45 P.M. Games Mayville - 44 St. Kate's Purple - 25 NSU/SDSMT - 44 UW-River Falls - 35 SMU - 46 GAC #1 - 42 8:40 P.M. Games Team Sorella - 71 Jamestown Jimmies - 49 Old Tymers - 45 Hamline #1 - 33 St. Cloud State - 46 Hamline #2 - 42 Simply a fantastic opening round of playoff games tonight over at the Midtown YWCA with each time slot having at least one soul-tugger of a game. In the 5:00 P.M. slot, the Gustavus Alumni team appeared to be in control early against St. Ben's but the Blazers slowly chipped away at the Gustie advantage and stole the lead away late as the Gustie alums squandered several late scoring opportunities that likely would have changed the outcome. In the 5:55 slot, the Gustavus #1 team went to the wire with the Anoka-Ramsey team as both teams traded late baskets but it was the Gusties who came away with a 37-36 thriller. But we were just getting started as the 6:50 slot had yet another nail-biter - the clash between the Anoka-Ramsey Alumni team and CSB. This was a back and forth affair throughout and both squads had chances late in regulation but couldn't convert as things were knotted up at 36 a piece. The first overtime was a scoreless defensive struggle with neither side gaining or giving an inch. Finally, in the second overtime, the Anoka-Ramsey Alumni team made the right moves at the right time and claimed a cherished 42-37 win. But things were far from finished as far as exciting games are concerned as the Gustavus #1 squad; fresh off of its earlier victory over Anoka-Ramsey, was looking to go 2-for-2 on the evening and punch their ticket into next week's round of games and looked to be in control coming down the stretch against their opponent, St. Mary's. The Cardinals, however, had vastly different ideas as they staged a rousing late comeback to end the Gustie dreams of a second week; snaring an unlikely four-point win. Meanwhile, in the 8:40 P.M. slot of games, the Hamline #2 squad appeared to be staging the biggest shocker of the night as they held the lead against Division II St. Cloud State for most of the contest and still clung to a small lead late. But the experienced Husky squad made a late charge to extinguish the Piper hopes of an incredible upset win as St. Cloud State survived by four points. Elsewhere, the St. Kate's Purple squad registered an impressive win against the Gustavus #2 team and looked good early on against Mayville - certainly in the first half anyway. But the Mayville squad regrouped at halftime and simply shut down the 'Cats in the second half; holding them to a scant FOUR points in the second half as Mayville cruised to an easy win. Team Sorella looked very impressive in their relatively easy win over Jamestown as did the Macalester team that has an interesting mixture of players from current players to the holdovers of the great '10 team such as the Rene Sisters (Jessica and Shannon) and Eartha Bell. The Old Tymers team of former Mankato State players held off a strong challenge from a very athletic Hamline #1 team to move into the second week.

Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League Results For Wednesday 7-17-13

Here are the results of the games I was able to catch last night at the Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League. 5:00 P.M. Games Augsburg - 43 Macalester Basketball - 39 Concordia St. Paul - 44 UST Purple - 41 5:55 P.M. Games Old Tymers - 42 CSB - 38 St. Kate's Purple - 59 St. Kate's Gold - 32 6:50 P.M. Games GAC Alumni - 43 Winona State - 38 St. Olaf - 44 GAC #2 - 30 The Misfits - 68 Hamline #2 - 35 7:45 P.M. Games GAC #1 - 42 Mayville - 38 Team Sorella - 68 St. Cloud State - 54 Winona State - 51 The Graduates - 34 Two very good games in the 5:00 P.M. slot as Augsburg finally got into the "W" column on the last night of the regular season with a hard-earned win over the Macalester squad. Concordia St. Paul, meanwhile, held off a strong challenge from the UST Purple squad which squandered several late opportunities and had a last chance three-point attempt go awry at the end. In the 5:55 P.M. slot, the Old Tymers looked anything but old as they used a late run to upend a youthful CSB team. The GAC Alumni squad registered likely the biggest surprise of the night, though, as they knocked off a very good Winona State team in a close contest in the 6:50 P.M. slot. In the 7:45 P.M. games, the GAC #1 squad had to hold on for dear life as they finally did beat Mayville and Team Sorella looked very impressive in their handling of St. Cloud State while Winona State got some redemption for their earlier loss in the evening by dumping The Graduates. The Summer League playoffs begin this next Wednesday night (7-24) and I anticipate that the playoff schedule will be released sometime late this week. Am hopeful that I can cover all rounds next week Wednesday night.

Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League Results For Wednesday 7-10-13

Here are the results of the games I was able to catch last night at the Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League: 5:00 P.M. Games St. Kate's Purple - 55 St. Olaf - 49 St. Cloud St. - 87 Anoka-Ramsey - 51 5:55 P.M. Games Macalester Basketball - 69 GAC #2 - 40 Royals - 48 GAC #1 - 42 6:50 P.M. Games The Misfits - 39 Augsburg - 28 Golden Eagle Alumni - 43 St. Scholastica & Others - 36 7:45 P.M. Games NSU/SDSMT - 32 Hamline #2 - 16 ARCC Alumni - 33 Hamline #1 - 29 Team Sorella - 76 CSB - 44 A couple of good games in the first two time slots as the St. Kate's Purple team held off a determined challenge from the St. Olaf squad in a close affair and the Bethel team (Royals) was able to hold on to beat the GAC #1 team in another nip and tuck affair. The best game that I saw last night was the Anoka-Ramsey Alumni team going up against the Hamline #1; an incredibly athletic contest that saw the Anoka-Ramsey Alumni team coming out on top with a hard-fought 33-29 win that wasn't decided until the final seconds. The team that continues to surprise (and impress me) is the Golden Eagle Alumni team. I wish I knew who these players were (I know one is a former Winona State player but don't know the rest). Maybe someone can help me here. :) Had to leave after the 8:40 games got underway; looked like a good one developing between the UST Grey team and Concordia St. Paul when I left.
