JCC Women's College Summer League Results For Monday 6-29-15

Here are the results of the games for last night's action at the JCC Women's College Summer League:

5:30 P.M. Game

Northern State - 50
GAC Alumni - 47

6:25 P.M. Game

GAC Black - 48
Uptown Dunk You Up - 17

7:20 P.M. Game

GAC Alumni + A Few - 54
GAC Gold - 39

A pretty good one in the 5:30 P.M. slot......GAC Alumni got off to a solid start on a short-handed Northern State squad but once former Centennial standout Jill Conrad arrived to help out her Northern State teammates, the tide turned as Conrad helped her team crawl right back into the thick of things right before the half down 27-25 at the break.  Northern State's momentum continued once the second half got underway as they built a lead and it looked as if the GAC Alumni team was doomed.  However, the former Gusties mounted a comeback late and got to within a single possession with just under one minute left but couldn't quite complete the deal as Northern State escaped with a hard-fought victory.  Not much drama in the 6:25 P.M. slot as the GAC Black team rolled to 48-17 win behind a dominating performance from sophomore-to-be PG Mikayla Miller who looked sensational at times last night.  In the nightcap, it looked early on as if the contest between the GAC Alumni + A Few team and the GAC Gold team could be a tight one as both teams battled to an 8-8 deadlock in the opening minutes.  However, the GAC Alumni + A Few team; led by former Gusties Bri Radtke, Molly Geske, and Colleen Ruane went on 12-0 tear to grab a 20-8 cushion and their young opponents could never quite recover despite not giving up much ground after that as the GAC Alumni + A Few team established a 31-20 halftime advantage.

Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League Results For Wednesday 6-24-15

Here are the results of the Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League for this last Wednesday night.  Again, I apologize for the delay as I am still experiencing on-going computer issues and the fact that I traveled back home to Iowa for a long weekend.

ARCC Alumni - 43

Royals - 74
Warriors - 53

9:35 P.M. Game

Hoops, I Did It Again - 45
Augsburg #1 - 41

Only one game in the 5:00 P.M. slot on this night as the Dream Team; thanks to some hot shooting my former Northwestern standout Mollie Sir, cruised past Anoka-Ramsey.  One great game in the 5:55 P.M. slot that saw the Winona State team edge the B Ballers team comprised of former Southwest Minnesota State players.  Predictably, however, Winona State ran out of gas in the 6:50 P.M. slot as they could not overcome the efforts of Concordia St. Paul.  In the 7:45 P.M. slot, a hot-shooting St. Olaf team grabbed an early lead but could not hold on to it as they dropped a six-point decision to the Phatties while the Golden Eagle Alumni team kept their winning streak alive with very good teamwork and smart play.  In the 8:40 P.M. slot, the Anoka-Ramsey Alumni team looked good in the first half but the wheels came off in the second half as the Augsburg #1 team rallied for the win while the Royals team showed why Bethel will be a the favorite to win the MIAC this next year with a convincing win over the Warriors.  In the 9:35 P.M. slot, the Hoops, I Did It Again Team comprised of mostly former Hamline players closed out the night with an entertaining close win over the Augsburg #1 team doing double-duty on this evening.

Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League Results For Wednesday 6-17-15

Here are the results for Wednesday evening's action at the Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League of the games I was able to catch.  I apologize for being so late with this but unfortunately, my home computer crashed on me earlier this week.  :(

5:00 P.M. Games

Concordia St. Paul - 53
St. Olaf - 26

Dream Team - 86
Augsburg #1 - 40

5:55 P.M. Games

St. Olaf - 50
Anoka-Ramsey - 30

Phatties - 65
UST Purple - 48

6:50 P.M. Games

Northern State - 49
CSB - 30

Warriors - 87
Augsburg #2 - 62

7:45 P.M. Games

B Ballers - 60
Hamline - 29

Bethany - 54
ARCC Alumni - 38

Runaways in the 5:00 P.M. slot as both Concordia St. Paul and the Dream Team got easy victories.  St. Olaf was able to salvage the evening in the 5:55 P.M. slot, however, as they got a twenty-point win over Anoka-Ramsey.  In the same slot, the Phatties team roughed up the UST Purple team with their big front line that features the Bray sisters; Amber and Ashley, formerly of Anoka.  Northern State was able to get into the win column on this night with a relatively easy win over CSB while the Warriors drubbed the Augsburg #2 team.  A very good and very big B Ballers squad consisting of mostly former Southwest Minnesota State players rolled past Hamline and Bethany was abke to pull away from the Anoka-Ramsey Alumni squad in the second half to earn a 54-38 win.

Things revert to a Wednesday night format this next week and there will be some very good games on tap with Winona State playing two games in the 5:55 and 6:50 P.M. slots.  Another good one to watch will be the Golden Eagle Alumni team going up against Northern State in the 7:45 P.M. slot.

5:00 PM Games

Concordia St. Paul - 44
CSB - 42

Hoops, I Did It Again - 46
ARCC Alumni - 27

5:55 PM Games

Concordia St Paul - 43

Hamline - 46

UST Purple - 50
Bethany - 40

7:45 PM Games

UST Black - 58
Royals - 47

St Olaf  - 43

Concordia St. Paul notched two victories on this night; getting the best of both CSB and Anoka-Ramsey while the Dream Team; an interesting consortium of former Bethel/UST/Northwestern players continues to look solid.  Ditto for the Golden Eagle Alumni team which continues to win.  Best game of the night was in the 7:45 PM slot where the competitive juices were really flowing in the UST Black - Royals game.  Neither side was willing to concede an inch but UST's Maddie Wolkow's three-point shooting was the difference in this one.

Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League Results For Wednesday 6-10-15

Here are the results of the games I was able to catch on the second night of action at the Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League:

5:00 P.M. Games

Northern State - 52
Concordia St. Paul - 46

CSB - 58
Anoka-Ramsey - 53

5:55 P.M. Game

Royals - 55
St. Olaf - 31

6:50 P.M. Games

B Ballers - 88
ARCC Alumni - 17

Golden Eagle Alumni - 43
Phatties - 36

7:45 P.M. Games

Hamline - 36
Augsburg #1 - 34

UST Black - 52
Dream Team - 32

A determined Northern State squad fended off a tough challenge from a young Concordia St. Paul squad as did CSB in their game against Anoka-Ramsey in the 5:00 P.M. slot.  Only one game tonight in the 5:55 P.M. slot and this one was tight for a while but the Royals squad went on a burst midway through the first half and held a 27-12 lead at the halftime break.  St. Olaf tried to make inroads but the Oles simply had no answer for the Bethel trio of Rachel Parupsky, Hannah Niewald and Kalli Zimmerman as the Royals coasted to a relatively easy 55-31 win.  While the B Baller squad completely whitewashed the Anoka-Ramsey Alumni squad on this night, a much tougher battle ensued in the other game in the 6:50 P.M. slot as the Golden Eagle Alumni squad, which always seems to play well in this league, kept a very physical Phatties squad in check and registered a tough 43-36 victory.  In the 7:45 P.M. slot, the UST Black team was able to open up distance on the Dream Team once the second half got underway and got an impressive twenty-point victory.  Meanwhile, a very tight and competitive battle took place in the other game between Hamline and the Augsburg #1 squad as the Pipers staved off two late opportunities for the Auggies in the final minute in regulation to eek out a narrow two-point victory.  Wish I could have hung around for the two 8:40 P.M. games but an early rise for work nixed those plans.

Again, next week will feature games on both Tuesday night (6-16) and Wednesday night (6-17) and I'll be there to cover what I can.

Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League Results For Tuesday 6-9-15

Here are the results of the games I was able to catch on opening night of the Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League:

5:00 P.M. Games

Winona State - 56
Concordia St. Paul - 49

Royals - 51
Bethany - 24

5:55 P.M. Games

Winona State - 50
Northern State - 48

CSB - 44
St. Olaf - 27

6:50 P.M. Games

B Ballers - 61
Hoops, I Did It Again - 32

Phatties - 68
Anoka-Ramsey - 30

7:45 P.M. Games

Warriors - 71
ARCC Alumni - 33

Augsburg #2 - 50
Golden Eagle Alumni - 47 OT

Had to fight a lot of traffic on the way over but did catch the last part of Winona State's tough win over NSIC rival Concordia St. Paul in the 5:00 P.M. slot.  Winona State repeated that feat in the 5:55 P.M. slot holding off yet another NSIC rival; Northern State, with a nip-and-tuck 50-48 victory.  In the other game, the CSB Blazers raced out to an early 28-7 lead on MIAC rival St. Olaf and though the Oles recovered somewhat, they simply dug themselves in too deep of a canyon to bring it all the way back.  The 6:50 P.M. games were both runaways as both the B Ballers and the Phatties teams cruised to easy wins.  The Warriors team; comprised mainly of Bemidji State players, made easy work of the Anoka-Ramsey Alumni squad but the best game of the night was the one between the Golden Eagle Alumni and the Augsburg #2 team.  The Golden Eagle Alumni appeared to have the edge down the stretch but the Auggie squad was not about to go quietly into the night.  They got a late basket to forge a 47-all deadlock by the end of regulation and a late three-pointer from the right corner with seconds ticking away in the extra session gave the Augsburg #2 team an upset win.

More action is on tap tomorrow night (Wednesday 6-10) as both this week and next week will have two evenings of games.

JCC Women's Summer League Results For Monday 6-8-15

Here are the results of the games on opening night at the JCC Women's Summer League:

5:30 P.M. Game

GAC Alumni - 53
Uptown Dunk You Up - 47  OT

6:25 P.M. Game

GAC Black - 57
GAC Gold - 33

7:20 P.M. Game

GAC Alumni + A Few - 61
Northern State - 49

An interesting game in the 5:30 P.M. slot.....The GAC Alumni team looked to be in control early on but their opponent; interestingly named the "Uptown Dunk You Up" did their damage from behind the arc as they quickly closed the gap thanks to some timely three-point shooting that cut the GAC Alumni's advantage to a scant 21-19 count by the halftime break.  Things would be tight in the second half but the GAC Alumni team was able to open up a slight advantage coming down the stretch and appeared to be ready to close things out but a late rally by the Uptown Dunk You Up team knotted things up at 47-all by the end of regulation.  Uptown Dunk You Up's luck ran out in the extra two-minute session, however, as the group of former Gusties went on a 6-0 run to get the "W".  In the 6:25 P.M. game, the GAC Black team was able to run past the younger, less-experienced GAC Gold team by a relatively comfortable 24-point margin.  The 7:20 P.M. game featuring Northern State going up against another group of former Gusties; this team called "GAC Alumni + A Few" figured to be a good one and it was.  Neither team could gain a decisive advantage in the first half and the GAC Alumni + A Few squad held a precarious 25-24 halftime advantage.  In the second half, however, the GAC Alumni + A Few squad gradually opened up a lead; thanks to a barrage of three-pointers and damage in the paint by their strong front line.  Up 41-33 with 10:30 left, the GAC Alumni + A Few team stretched the lead to eleven at 50-39 with 6:15 left and maintained that double-digit edge down the stretch to claim a 61-49 victory.

Summer Leagues!

Well, I'm back after a nearly three-month hiatus from the Girl's State Tournament back in March.  Keeping at it with the tennis and working out has restricted my time with the hoops but with the return of the summer leagues it was time to dust off the cobwebs and get back at it again.

Two summer leagues kick off this week:  The Midtown YWCA League starts Tuesday night (6-9) and this week and next week there will be games on both Tuesday evening and Wednesday evening before things settle into a Wednesday night format with a break in the action on Wednesday (7-1) for the fourth of July holiday.  Another league that gets going this week is the Sabes Jewish Community Center Summer League run by Lauri Ludemann.  This will be the second year of this league and I thought this league did pretty well last summer given the relative lack of space at the facility.  It will be interesting to see what teams have signed up as I'm sure this one will provide some very interesting matchups for sure.

Still another league that just got underway last weekend is the one over at the Hudson, Wisconsin YMCA.  I got to visit that league a couple of times this last year but the distance over there and getting ready for another workweek may limit my visits over there again.  Still, I plan on getting over there soon to see whose in and to get a look at the players as well.

On a side note, Bemidji State announced the hiring of Chelsea DeVille on Friday this last week  to fill the head coaching vacancy there.  Solid hire, IMHO, and I suspect she'll have that program competitive again in a very tough NSIC.

So, am definitely looking forward to getting back into the swing again this week and I eagerly look forward to all the games!
