Bumper-to-bumper traffic on Highway 55 delayed my arrival at the Midtown YWCA late yesterday afternoon and I was afraid I'd miss out on the 5:00 P.M. games.  Luckily, I got inside to catch two exciting finishes in this time slot.  St. Olaf was holding a slim lead late on the Warriors squad but a series of late mistakes allowed the lead to slip through the fingers of the Oles and let the Warriors escape with an unlikely 53-49 win.  In the other contest, Northern State and Concordia were involved in a very tight contest and, with the game tied at 57, Concordia St. Paul had the ball with the final seconds ticking down.  Northern State, which should have let the Concordia St. Paul team take a tough, contested shot, inadvertently fouled instead with scant time left on the clock which allowed two free throws - both made as Concordia St. Paul snared a 59-57 victory.......In the 5:55 P.M. slot, the CSB squad made relatively easy work of Bethany in their game while Northern State, still smarting from the heartbreak in its earlier game, jumped out to a 12-0 lead on the UST Black team and appeared to be enroute to an easy win.  But the UST Black squad was able to chip away at the deficit and not only drew close but also grabbed a 31-29 lead at the half.  In the second half, Northern State appeared to get a second wind as they reclaimed the lead and momentum and it looked as if they had things pretty much sewn up but the UST Black squad had a late run left in them and they eventually tied the game at 47 with under a minute left.  But this time Northern State would make amends for its earlier defeat.  With time winding down, freshman-to-be Taylor Kane of Grand Rapids got loose in the right corner with the ball and, with one second left on the clock, she drilled a long jumper just inside the arc to give Northern State a dramatic 47-45 buzzer-beater win in what was easily the game of the night.....In the 6:50 P.M. slot, the UST Purple team throttled the Augsburg #2 team by 40 while the Royals team (Bethel) withstood a fine effort by Hoops, I Did It Again getting a slim 49-45 victory......In the 7:45 P.M. slot, the Phatties squad, led by a strong front line of Amber and Ashley Bray and an experienced former Concordia St. Paul standout Rachel Hansen, easily took down a young Hamline team while an equally young Anoka-Ramsey squad sprung a surprise; knocking off the Augsburg #1 team by a 56-50 margin.

Playoff action begins next week Wednesday (7-22) and I expect we'll see some very good games out of that so come on down to the Midtown YWCA to catch the action!
