The NCAA came out with their first regional rankings of the 2017-18 season yesterday afternoon and here's how the all-important West Region rankings on the women's side look at the moment:
1. Wartburg 22-0 13-0
2. UST 20-2 15-0
3. Whitman 21-1 13-0
4. CSB 20-2 14-1
5. Bethel 16-6 11-4
6. George Fox 18-3 11-1
7. GAC 18-4 12-3
8. Chapman 19-3 13-0
Wartburg deservedly leads this group with its unblemished record and unless Luther comes out of nowhere to upset the apple cart, the IIAC appears to be a one-bid league. This could be good news for the three teams behind UST in the MIAC right now but, keep in mind, other than CSB, both GAC and Bethel would likely have to at least make the MIAC Championship Game to have reasonable hope of getting a bid to the NCAA Tournament although Bethel does have that win over George Fox over the Thanksgiving holiday that gives them an edge. The NWC looks like a two-team league with both Whitman and George Fox getting in. Chapman was the only team out of the SCIAC receiving a regional ranking at the moment although Claremont-Mudd-Scripps does sport a very good 19-3 overall record and 12-1 in SCIAC play so you cannot totally discount their chances of getting in. UW-Superior wrapped up the UMAC regular season title last night by beating Northwestern and the Yellowjackets have a 19-4 overall record and are 14-0 in UMAC play. The only other team in the UMAC that could upset the apple cart at the moment would appear to be Bethany Lutheran at 18-5 overall and 11-3 in conference play.
Fire away with thoughts.....
