Here are the results of the games I was able to cover this last Wednesday night at the Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League:

6:15 PM Games

GAC Alumni - 37

UW-Stout - 35  2OT

The Currey Crew - 63

Anoka-Ramsey - 43

Arden Hills - 51

KATZ - 45

7:15 PM Games

Bemidji St - 73

CSB - 52

UNW Eagles - 72

Luther - 52

Of the games I was able to cover on this night, the battle on Court 1 in the 6:15 PM slot was easily the game of the night that saw the UW-Stout team taking on the GAC Alumni team.  Defense would take center stage in this game as the GAC Alumni team would establish a 3-0 lead at the 9:25 mark of the opening period and would hold a 4-2 advantage near the midway point of the first period.  After a sluggish start, the UW-Stout team finally got into a bit of a groove as they embarked on a 7-0 run to hold a 9-4 lead with 1:30 left and they would hold this same lead by the end of the first period.  But this cushion that the UW-Stout team had would shrink to just one point as the GAC Alumni team got on a push to make it a 9-8 ballgame by the 8:00 mark of the second period.  Then Grace Benz (GAC '23) would put the GAC Alumni ahead by a 10-9 count when she snared a steal and raced the other way for a lay-up at the 6:25 mark.  But this didn't faze the UW-Stout team as they went on an 8-0 run to lead 17-10 with 2:10 left and they definitely looked to have things going their way with a 19-10 lead by the halftime break.  The UW-Stout team would still be up 19-13 at the 8:20 mark of the third period but the GAC Alumni team kept whittling away at this deficit and they would cut the UW-Stout team lead down to 25-21 with 3:20 left and they would at least maintain this four-point edge at 26-22 by the end of the third period.  By the time the fourth period got underway, the GAC Alumni team definitely seemed to have momentum on their side as they cut the UW-Stout team lead down to 26-24 by the 8:45 mark and they would soon have this contest leveled at 26 by the 8:00 mark.  By the 6:45 mark, the GAC Alumni team had finally pushed ahead again up 28-26 and they would hold onto this slim two-point edge at 30-28 with 3:05 left in regulation.  That lead would increase to 31-28 after Anna Sanders (GAC '23) got one free throw to go down with 2:05 left in regulation.  But the UW-Stout team was not ready to concede by any stretch and they would get this one knotted at 31 a piece with :13 left in regulation so off we went to an extra two-minute session.  This game would be tied at 33 a piece with :33 left in the first overtime and with :31 left, the UW-Stout team would take a 35-33 lead but the GAC Alumni team would force a second overtime getting this game tied up yet again at 35 a piece.  In the one-minute second overtime period, the GAC Alumni team would forge ahead at 37-35 with :34 left and the UW-Stout team couldn't get the bucket in their final possession as the GAC Alumni team held on for an exciting and fun win.......The game over on Court 2 didn't have nearly the drama although things would initially be close between the Anoka-Ramsey team and The Currey Crew team.  The Anoka-Ramsey team would hold the upper hand in the beginning of this game with a 2-0 lead at the 9:10 mark of the opening period and up 8-6 midway through the first period.  The Anoka-Ramsey team would be clinging to a 12-11 advantage with 2:40 left but The Currey Crew team would get this game leveled at 14 a piece by the end of the first period.  The Anoka-Ramsey team would gain another one-point advantage up 20-19 by the midway point of the second period but it was here that The Currey Crew team went on a game-changing 19-2 run to hold a 28-20 advantage with 3:21 left and expand that lead to 38-22 by the halftime break.  The Currey Crew team would grow this lead to 44-26 by the 8:30 mark of the third period and even though the Anoka-Ramsey team was able to take a bit of a bite out of this deficit at the midway point of the third period down 44-30, they weren't able to sustain a substantial run as The Currey Crew team would enjoy a 53-35 lead by the end of the third period.  By the midway point of the fourth period, The Currey Crew team had established a twenty-point cushion up 58-38 as they coasted to an easy win.......Another good contest was taking place over on Court 3 in this time slot between the Arden Hills team and the KATZ team.  This one would be knotted at five a piece by the 7:20 mark of the opening period and the Arden Hills team would be clinging to a 12-11 lead with 3:05 left in the first period.  But the KATZ team would manage to turn the table and hold a 15-14 lead by the end of the first period.  Right back would come the Arden Hills team as they would retake the lead at 17-15 at the 9:50 mark of the second period on a three-point bomb and they would be up by a 23-20 count by the midway point of the second period.  By the halftime break, the Arden Hills team would holding onto a somewhat tenuous 25-23 advantage.  Things would still be tight by the 7:05 mark of the third period with the Arden Hills team holding onto a 29-27 advantage but a bit later, a 5-0 push would give the Arden Hills team a 34-27 lead by the midway point of the third period.  The Arden Hills team would stretch that lead to 40-32 with 1:50 left although the KATZ team would cut that lead down to five at 40-35 by the end of the third period.  Things would still hang in the balance once the fourth period got underway with the Arden Hills team holding an uncertain 46-41 lead near the midway point of the fourth period but they were able to build more of a cushion with a 49-41 lead with 1:30 left in regulation and hung on for the win.

Only two games going on in the 7:15 PM slot on this night which made things a bit easier for me anyway.  On Court 1, the Bemidji St team was taking on the CSB team and things would be close for a while.  The Bemidji St team would own a 4-2 edge by the 7:35 mark of the opening period and although they would stretch this lead to 7-2 by the midway point of the first period, the CSB team would go on a 5-0 push to get things leveled at seven a piece with 3:10 left and by the end of the first period, the Bemidji St team was trying to hold onto a slim 14-13 advantage.  The CSB team would grab its first lead of the evening at 15-14 by the 9:20 mark of the second period but but that didn't last long as the Bemidji St team would come back at take a 17-16 lead at the 6:25 mark.  Right back would come the CSB team on the strength of a three-point bomb to retake the lead at 18-16 by the midway point of the second period.  Still, the Bemidji St team recovered to take the lead back at 27-23 with 2:25 left and they would maintain this four-point edge at 29-25 by the halftime break.  Once the third period got underway, the Bemidji St team gradually increased its lead; holding a 32-27 advantage at the 7:20 mark of the third period and stretching that lead to 37-29 near the midway point of the third period.  The Bemidji St team built its lead to double digits at 44-29 with 3:30 left and they would enjoy a 46-31 advantage by the end of the third period.  The CSB team would attempt to make inroads on this cushion once the fourth period got underway; slimming the deficit down to ten at 46-36 by the 8:50 mark of the fourth period but they would eventually run out of gas as the Bemidji St team to the lead to 53-38 near the midway point of the fourth period and had things in cruise control the rest of the way for the win.......The game on Court 2 between the Luther team and the UNW Eagles team took on a similar tone as the Luther team would take a quick 3-0 lead by the 9:20 mark of the opening period and the would hold a 5-1 advantage by the midway point of the first period.  Things were still going the Luther team's way as they were up 10-3 with 4:42 left but the UNW Eagles team shook off the sluggish start and cut the deficit down to just two points at 10-8 with 2:05 left.  A bit later with 1:55 left, a three-point bomb pushed the UNW Eagles team out in front at 11-10 but the Luther team would come back to forge a 13-13 deadlock by the end of the first period.  Things would still be close in the early moments of the second period with the UNW Eagles team holding a 16-13 advantage but they would be able to grow that lead to 20-13 by the 7:25 mark of the second period.  Still, the Luther team would come right back with a 6-0 push that cut the deficit to one at 20-19 with 4:30 left but the UNW Eagles team would up the lead to 22-19 with 1:30 left and recent Augsburg grad Katie Manecke; helping out the UNW Eagles team on this night, gave them even more breathing room with a pretty coast-to-coast lay-up right before the buzzer that gave them a 27-21 lead by the halftime break.  The Luther team would hang tough, though, once the third period got underway, trailing by only four at 30-26 by the 9:05 mark of the third period and they would get back to within a single possession down 32-29 a short time later.  Curiously, the Luther team seemed to hit the wall at this point as the UNW Eagles team got the lead to 39-34 by the midway point of the third period and they would up this lead to 44-36 with 2:55 left.  A big spurt by the UNW Eagles team ensued and by the end of the third period, they were in control with a 59-40 advantage.  Things were pretty much academic after that with the UNW Eagles team holding a 63-40 lead at the 7:30 mark of the fourth period and they stretched the lead to 68-43 midway through the fourth period as they rolled to an easy win.

Another big night of games coming up this next Wednesday night so make sure you get yourself down to the Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League to take in all the action!

A busy night in both time slots on this Wednesday night and especially in the 6:15 PM slot with two very good games going on.  One of them was taking place over on Court 1 between The HAMster Balls team and the Bemidji St team.  The HAMster Balls team would take an early 2-0 lead by the 8:45 mark of the opening period but the Bemidji St team would respond and push ahead by an 8-4 count with 2:45 left and they would establish a bit more breathing room with a 12-6 advantage by the end of the first period.  But the Bemidji St team's lead would be slimmed down to 14-10 by the 7:15 mark of the second period and The HAMster Balls team would eventually get this game leveled at 19 a piece by the halftime break.  Things would still be knotted up at 23 a piece by the 7:45 mark of the third period but the Bemidji St team found a second wind and established a 29-24 advantage with 2:30 left and they appeared to have things going their way with a 32-26 lead by the end of the third period.  But The HAMster Balls team double down on defense once the fourth period got underway and clawed their way back to within a single possession down 32-30 near the midway point of the fourth period.  The Bemidji St team was unable to find much offensively down the stretch and that allowed The HAMster Balls team to finally get this one tied up once more at 32 a piece with 1;45 left in regulation.  With under thirty seconds left in regulation, The HAMster Balls team pushed ahead 34-32 and they would hold on in the frantic few final seconds to earn a hard-fought win.......Meanwhile, an interesting contest was brewing over on Court 2 between The Currey Crew team and the Leaky Roof team.  The Currey Crew team would grab a 3-0 lead out of the gate in the first period at the 9:50 mark and they would still have the upper hand with a 12-7 advantage with 2:05 left and would maintain the five-point cushion at 17-12 by the end of the first period.  But the Leaky Roof team would get this contest tightened up significantly by the 7:45 mark of the second period down just 22-20 and they would get this game leveled at 22 a short time later.  Things would still be knotted up at 28 a piece with 3:30 left before The Currey Crew team was able to poke its nose back out in front by a 34-32 count with :35 left and they would own a slim 37-34 advantage by the halftime break.  Not leaving anything to chance, The Currey Crew team would get on a spurt once the third period got underway and they would increase their lead to 43-37 by the 8:30 mark and they would establish a double-digit advantage at 54-42 with 3:45 left.  The Leaky Roof team was unable to find the earlier magic they had enjoyed earlier and by the end of the third period, The Currey Crew team found themselves up 63-49.  The Leaky Roof team would attempt one more bid to draw closer; cutting the deficit down to ten at 63-53 by the 7:25 mark of the fourth period and there was still a ray of hope when they had the deficit down to nine at 65-56 near the midway point of the fourth period but they could never get any closer than that as The Currey Crew team closed this one out down the stretch.......Another very good game was taking place over on Court 3 between the Arden Hills team and the Lions Black team.  The Arden Hills team would own the upper hand in this contest coming out of the gate as they enjoyed an 8-4 advantage at the 6:50 mark of the opening period and they would stretch that lead to 11-4 by the 6:20 mark.  But the Lions Black team would narrow the deficit to a single possession down 11-8 with 4:00 left and the Arden Hills team's lead would be down to just two at 16-14 by the end of the first period.  But the Arden Hills team would step on the gas again once the second period got underway and get a bit more breathing room with a 20-16 advantage by the 8:45 mark of the second period and they would get that lead to seven at 28-21 with 2:55 left and they appeared to be in control of things with a 30-23 lead by the halftime break.  But things changed quickly in this contest once the third period got underway as the Lions Black team stormed back with a 10-0 run to assume a 33-30 lead by the 6:10 mark of the third period and two scores by graduate senior Emma (not evil) Kniefel (lay-up and score in the paint) helps the Lions Black team maintain this three-point edge at 35-32 a short time later.  The Lions Black team lead would be cut to 37-36 with 1:10 left but they would get a bit more breathing room up 40-36 by the end of the third period on a three-point bomb right before the buzzer.  Things would remain tight once the fourth period got underway with the Lions Black team holding onto a 40-38 lead at the 8:05 mark and with 3:55 left in regulation, the Lions Black team was holding onto this tenuous two-point lead at 45-43.  With 2:30 left in regulation the Lions Black team would be up 48-45 and they would up that lead to 50-45 with 2:00 left.  The Lions Black team was still not out of the woods just yet as the Arden Hills team made one more bid down the home stretch but fell just short by two points at the end........Over on Court 4, the Court Crashers team was taking on the Luther team and this one was all the Court Crashers team at the beginning as they held an 8-4 lead by the midway point of the first period and would balloon that lead to 24-6 by the end of the first period.  The Court Crashers team would own a 34-15 lead with 3:40 left in the second period and with a 40-24 lead by the halftime break, the Court Crashers team appeared to be safe.  The Court Crashers team would enjoy a 48-32 advantage near the midway point of the third period and they would maintain this fourteen-point edge up 50-36 with 2:00 left and they still appeared to be in very good shape up 52-39 by the end of the third period.  But the Court Crashers double-digit cushion would slowly but surely evaporate once the fourth period got underway as they lead was shrunk to 61-48 near the midway point of the fourth period and the Luther team would keep clawing away; eventually getting back into single-digit range again.  They would get it down to just four points at 65-61 in the final minute of play but bringing this one back all the way proved to be a bridge too far as the Court Crashers team held on for a nail-biting win.

Nowhere near the drama in the 7:15 PM slot.  On Court 1, The Mix Ups team was taking on the Lions Gold team.  Things would stay tight early on in this one with The Mix Ups team holding a 3-2 advantage at the 9:05 mark of the opening period and the Lions Gold team would get this one tied at 10-all with 3:08 left.  And although The Mix Ups team would hold a slim 14-12 lead by the end of the first peeriod, they would gradually get more breathing room as they would own a 21-16 lead midway through the second period and would up that lead to seven at 28-21 by the halftime break.  The Lions Gold team would attempt to tighten things up in the early moments of the third period as The Mix Ups team's lead was down to 32-27 by the 7:45 mark of the third period but they would go on another push to up the lead to nine at 37-28 with 4:15 left and would have a ten-point cushion at 44-34 by the end of the third period.  The Mix Ups team would maintain this ten-point cushion up 46-36 midway through the fourth period and they held their opponent at bay down the stretch to get the win.......Over on Court 2, the KATZ team was looking for some redemption after a tough first week for them as they were taking on a team doing double duty on this night - the Bemidji St team.  The KATZ team jumped on their opponent quickly; building an 8-2 lead by the 7:13 mark of the first period and getting the lead to 16-8 with 3:00 left.  The Bemidji St team would briefly cut the deficit down to six at 20-14 with 1:20 left but then the KATZ team unleashed a 4-0 spurt to own a ten-point cushion at 24-14 by the end of the first period.  The Bemidji St team would briefly have the deficit down to single digits again at 28-20 at the 7:45 mark of the second period but the KATZ team would rebuild that double-digit cushion at 36-25 midway through the second period and would lead 40-28 with 2:30 left and they would enjoy a 45-34 lead by the halftime break.  The KATZ team would grow this lead to 56-37 by the 6:40 mark of the third period and the lead would soon balloon to 62-39 with 4:30 left.  Two free throws by junior-to-be Kaylee Miron had the KATZ team up 65-44 with 1:35 left and by the end of the third period, the KATZ team was rolling with a 69-44 advantage.  There was little doubt as to how this one was going to end up as the KATZ team would hold a 71-50 lead at the 7:35 mark of the fourth period and they would maintain the status quo with a 73-52 lead midway through the fourth period as they rolled to an easy win........And certainly not much drama either on Court 3 in this time slot that saw the Sara's Shooters team taking on the Court Crashers team which was also doing double duty on this Wednesday evening.  The Sara's Shooters team would hold an 11-5 lead at the 6:52 mark of the opening period and would be up 15-8 by the midway point of the first period.  With 1:05 left, the Sara's Shooters team grew its lead to double-digits at 26-11 and they would hold this same lead by the end of the first period.  The Sara's Shooters team would grow its lead to 30-14 by the 8:10 mark of the second period and that lead would bulge to 40-18 with 2:30 left.  By the halftime break, the Sara's Shooters team was already cruising with a 46-19 lead.  Not much changed once the third period got underway with the Sara's Shooters team up 51-20 by the 6:30 mark of the third period and a 56-25 lead with 1:30 left and they would be up 56-27 by the end of the third period.  A 4-0 spurt by the Sara's Shooters team had this one all but in the books by the 7:45 mark of the fourth period with a 60-27 lead as they rolled to a blowout victory.......The weird game of the night took place over on Court 4 in this time slot that saw the CSB team taking on the Free Agents team.  The CSB team appeared to take control early in this contest as they would hold an 11-8 lead by the midway point of the opening period and they would slowly grow this lead to 22-16 with 1:15 left and still have a 24-19 advantage by the end of the first period.  The CSB team would grow its lead to seven at 33-26 by the 6:02 mark of the second period and up that lead to 41-32 with 1:05 left and with a 43-32 lead at the halftime break, all signs seemed to be pointing toward an easy win for the CSB team.  But the Free Agents team would slyly whittle away at this deficit once the third period got underway; crawling back to within single digits down 50-42 midway through the third period and by the end of the third period, the CSB team definitely appeared to be losing its grip with a tenuous 53-49 advantage.  The Free Agents team had the energy once the fourth period got underway and they would eventually poke their nose out in front 57-55 by the 6:05 mark of the fourth period and not let up.  By the midway point of the fourth period, the Free Agents team had grown its lead to 63-55 and despite a late bid by the CSB team that got the deficit down to five at 65-60 with 2:00 left in regulation, the Free Agents team shut the door down the stretch to get the come-from-behind victory.

Things revert to a Wednesday night format this next week so make sure you get down to the Midtown YWCA to catch all the action!

On Court 1 in the 6:15 PM slot on this Tuesday evening, the CSB team was ready to rock and roll as they were taking on the Leaky Roof (Augsburg) team.  The CSB team would draw first blood in this contest with a 2-0 lead at the 9:10 mark of the opening period and they would grow that lead to 13-6 after a short jumper with 3:18 left and before this first period was over, the CSB team would embark on an 8-2 push to up that lead to 21-8.  The CSB team would gradually expand this lead even more once the second period got underway and with 3:35 left, they were up comfortably at 31-13 and by the halftime break, the CSB team was rolling with a 42-15 advantage.  The Leaky Roof team would try to patch the numerous holes in their boat and by the midway point of the third period, they had cut the CSB team's lead down to 42-21 but those quick fixes were only temporary as the CSB team would balloon the lead to 58-21 by the end of the third period.  The Leaky Roof team would make one last attempt to shave the fat off of this deficit with a 6-0 push at the beginning of the fourth period that cut the CSB team's lead down to 58-27 by the midway point but it wouldn't be nearly enough as the CSB team had things in cruise control the rest of the way for an easy win........A somewhat tighter game ensued over on Court 2 between the Lions Black team and the Retired Athletes team.  The Lions Black team would own a 5-2 advantage by the 7:10 mark of the opening period and they would establish more breathing room with an 11-4 lead with 2:00 left in the first period and they would maintain this seven point lead at 14-7 by the end of the first period.  After the sluggish start by the Retired Athletes team in that first period, they got a big lift once the second period got underway thanks to three-point bomb by former Sioux Falls/Concordia St Paul/Park Center standout Danielle Schaub from the top of the key that cut the deficit down to four at 16-12 at they 7:45 mark.  Still, the Lions Black team would maintain a bit of a cushion with a 22-16 lead midway through the second period and they would be able to maintain this six-point cushion by the halftime break up 24-18.  The Retired Athletes team would make another foray to get things tight again as they closed to within a single possession down 27-24 at the 7:05 mark of the third period.  But the Lions Black team would then step on the accelerator to open up more breathing room once again and shutting the door for good as they would increase their lead to 33-27 with 4:08 left and by the end of the third period, they had a double-digit cushion at 42-29.  The Lions Black team would own a 46-34 advantage by the 6:50 mark of the third period and controlled things down the home stretch for the win........The game of the night from my coverage took place over on Court 3 between the UW-Stout team and the GAC Alumni team and it was a fun one to watch.  Trailing 7-4, the GAC Alumni team would knot this one at seven a piece on a three-point bomb by Anna Sanders (GAC '23) near the midway point of the first period and this one would remained tied at 10-all with 4:00 left.  The UW-Stout team would manage to grab the upper hand in this contest as they would hold a 13-10 lead with 1:05 left and they would have a bit more breathing room by the end of the first period with a 16-12 lead.  The UW-Stout team looked to be gaining control of this contest as they held an 18-12 lead at the 6:45 mark of the second period and they would hold a 20-13 lead midway through the second period.  The UW-Stout team would increase its lead to 28-20 with 1:35 left in the second period but the GAC Alumni team would get a big boost with late scores by both Sanders and Grace Benz (GAC '23) as they closed to within a single possession down 28-25 by the halftime break.  The UW-Stout team would get on another push once the third period got underway; upping their lead to 37-31 by the 7:05 mark but this cushion wouldn't last long as the GAC Alumni team was hot on their trail and closed to within a single possession again down just 39-37 with 1:50 left and the UW-Stout team would be clinging to this two-point edge up 41-39 by the end of the third period.  The GAC Alumni team would finally get this game leveled at 41 by the 8:30 mark of the fourth period and they would finally poke their nose out in front at 43-41 when Benz connected on a tough score in the paint at the 6:08 mark.  The GAC Alumni team would own a 45-42 advantage in this one with 3:30 left and after the UW-Stout team tied it up at 45, the GAC Alumni team would get ahead 48-45 thanks to another three point bomb by Sanders with 2:45 left.  But a resourceful UW-Stout team would soon get this game tied up at 48 a piece with 2:10 left and they would own a 50-48 lead with :25 left in regulation and hold on for an exciting and fun victory.

In the 7:15 PM slot, the UW-Stout team was doing double duty; this time taking on the defending champions from last year's Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League, the Wash-Ups team over on Court 1.  But that didn't faze the UW-Stout team one iota and they would quickly open up space against a short-handed Wash-Ups team; getting a 2-0 advantage by the 8:42 mark of the first period and they would build that lead to 13-3 with 2:12 left and grow it even more to 18-5 by the end of the first period.  With 3:35 left in the second period, the UW-Stout team's lead had ballooned to 34-9 and by the halftime break, the UW-Stout team owned a 44-16 advantage.  The UW-Stout team's lead would only grow from there as they would own a 52-22 lead midway through the third period and that lead would bulge to 64-26 by the end of the third period.  The UW-Stout team would hold a whopping 78-29 lead near the midway point of the fourth period as they rolled to a blowout win.........A much tighter contest was ensuing over on Court 2 as the Lions Gold team was taking on the UNW Eagles team.  The Lions Gold team would hold a slim 7-5 advantage by the 7:00 mark of the first period and they would hold a 13-10 advantage with 1:25 left.  But a late spurt by the Lions Gold team would increase that lead to seven at 21-14 by the end of the first period.  A lay-up by graduate senior Syd Hauger would increase the lead to 23-14 early on in the second period and with 2:30 left, the Lions Gold team's lead would increase even more to 37-19.  By the halftime break, the Lions gold team had established a twenty-point cushion at 41-21.  The Lions Gold team would still hold a sizable 43-25 lead midway through the third period but the UNW Eagles team would shave some of the fat off of the deficit to get the Lions Gold team's lead down to 47-31 with 14:49 left in the third period and the Lions Gold team would at least maintain the sixteen-point lead at 49-33 by the end of the third period.  By the midway point of the fourth period, the Lions Gold team had re-established the twenty-point cushion at 60-40 and they would maintain this cushion up 66-46 with 3:20 left in regulation.  Despite a late push by the UNW Eagles team, the Lions Gold team would still pocket a comfortable victory........Not a lot of drama over on Court 3 in this time slot that saw the Luther team taking on the Court Crushers team.  The latter would get out of the gate quickly with the Court Crushers team up 8-2 at the 6:45 mark of the first period and they would open up a 24-7 lead with 1:50 left.  And the Court Crushers team would maintain this seventeen-point lead up 27-10 by the end of the first period.  The Court Crushers team would grow its lead to 35-14 midway through the second period and by the halftime break, the Court Crushers team was rolling with a 49-18 lead.  Things would only get worse for the Luther team once the third period got going with the Court Crushers team up 53-19 with 3:00 left and they would lead 59-22 by the end of the third period.  The Court Crushers team had things in cruise control once the fourth period got underway and they would hold a whopping 73-38 lead with 4:15 left enroute to an easy victory........A much better game was taking place over on Court 4 in this busy time slot as the Sara's Shooters team was taking on the KATZ team.  The Sara's Shooters team would hold a slim 8-7 advantage by the 7:10 mark of the opening period and they would be clinging to that one-point edge at 10-9 by the 6:05 mark.  A bit later at the midway point of the first period, the KATZ team would get its nose out in front as 12-10 but that wouldn't last long as the Sara's Shooters team would retake the lead at 16-15 with 3:05 left and they would hold a 23-21 advantage at the end of this back-and-forth first period.  The Sara's Shooters team would establish some breathing room by the 7:45 mark of the second period as they assumed a 32-26 lead but right back came the KATZ team as they leveled this contest at 37 with 3:10 left.  This game would be tied at 39 a piece with 1:50 left and after the Sara's Shooters team had taken a 42-39 lead a short time afterward, the KATZ team would again knot this contest at 42 thanks to a three-point bomb by senior-to-be Greta Schimnowski with 1:25 left.  Fittingly, this game would be tied at 47-all at the halftime break.  But the KATZ team was unable to sustain the earlier momentum and this allowed the Sara's Shooters team to take advantage of things once the third period got underway as they built a 61-53 lead midway through the third period  and they would maintain this eight-point cushion at 63-55 with 1;15 left.  Even though the KATZ team was able to trim the deficit to six at 64-58 by the end of the third period, the Sara's Shooters team would get on another run once the fourth period got underway; building a 71-62 advantage by the midway point of the fourth period and leading 76-65 with 1:50 left in regulation that cemented the win for them at the end.

In the 6:15 PM slot over on Court 1, the UW-Stout team would grab an early 1-0 lead on a free throw but the Luther team would manage to forge ahead at 3-1 on a "3" at the 7:40 mark of the opening period.  That was about the lone bright spot for the Luther team on this night.  Still, this game would be leveled at 10-10 with 3:10 left in the first period but the UW-Stout team would poke its nose out in front at 12-10 with 2:45 left and that lead would grow to 17-12 with 1:57 left.  One free throw by senior-to-be Raegan Sorenson upped the lead to 18-12 with 1:10 left and that lead would grow to 20-12 by the end of the first period.  The UW-Stout team's lead would get to double-digits at 24-12 by the 7:45 mark of the second period and slowly grow to 28-15 by the 6:31 mark.  By the halftime break, the UW-Stout team was up comfortably at 39-22.  The roof would cave in for the Luther team once the third period got underway as the UW-Stout team lead would grow to 50-25 at the 7:25 mark and that lead would bulge to forty at 67-27 with 2:15 left in the third period.  By the 6:40 mark of the fourth period, UW-Stout was rolling up 75-30 enroute to the blowout victory......Over on Court 2, two old MIAC rivals were going at it as the CSB team was taking on the Lions Black (the other GAC team).  The Lions Black team would come out of the gates quickly in this game; getting a 7-0 lead by the 6:15 mark of the opening period and would still hold a 7-2 lead with 4:00 left in the first period.  Curiously, the Lions Black team hit a rough patch and that provided an opening for the CSB team to take advantage which they did as they would embark on a 15-2 run to hold a surprising 17-9 lead by the end of the first period.  But the Lions Black team was undaunted by all this as they battled to quickly get back into this game once the second period got underway.  Graduate senior Syd Hauger would bury a big three-point bomb that got the Lions Black team back to within a single possession down 17-14 and the Lions Black team would cap this 8-0 burst by the 7:35 mark by getting this game tied at 17 and this contest would still be leveled at 19 midway through the second period.  Two free throws by Hauger with 3:45 left gave the Lions Black team a 23-19 lead and the Lions Black team would hold a 25-22 edge by the halftime break.  The Lions Black team would maintain this three-point edge at 27-24 when fellow graduate senior Izzy (Izzy Izzy, you're making me dizzy) Quick made a pretty drive for a finish early in the third period but Quick was just getting started on this night as she started getting things done on both ends of the floor.  Her efforts enabled the Lions Black team to hold a 33-24 advantage midway through the third period and with 2:04 left in the third period, a Quick jumper now had the Lions Black team up double digits at 37-24 and the Lions Black team would maintain this thirteen-point edge up 40-27 by the end of the third period.  The CSB team would make one last bid to get things tightened up again once the fourth period got underway as they would cut the Lions Black team's lead to 40-31 at the 6:45 mark and there was still a ray of hope with 4:00 left with the Lions Black team's lead down to eight at 44-36 but the CSB team could never get any closer and the Lions Black closed this game out on another run to get the convincing victory........Over on Court 3, the Arden Hills team (Bethel) was taking on The Currey Crew and the latter bolted out of the gates fast in this contest as they would find themselves up 11-4 by the midway point of the first period but the Arden Hills team would manage to tighten things up a bit down the stretch as The Currey Crew team's lead was cut to 16-11 by the end of the first period.  The Arden Hills team would continue to hang tough once the second period got underway as they would reduce the deficit to four at 26-22 midway through the second period and in the latter stages of the second period, the Arden Hills team had crawled back to within a single possession down 28-26 and two late free throws had this game leveled at 28 by the halftime break.  But the Arden Hills team would hit a rough patch of their own once the third period got underway as The Currey Crew team would forge ahead by a 34-28 count by the 6:35 mark of the third period and this game-changing 11-0 run by The Currey Crew had them up 39-28 midway through the third period.  By the end of the third period, The Currey Crew team had a much more comfortable 46-32 advantage and they would maintain this fourteen-point cushion up 54-40 by the 6:15 mark of the fourth period.  With 2:35 left, there was little doubt as to how this one was going to end up as The Curry Crew team was holding a 63-45 lead.

The 7:15 PM slot was another crazy time with four games going on.  On Court 1, the UW-Stout team; doing double-duty on this night, faced off with the Lions Gold team which ordinarily should have been a very much-anticipated matchup.  But the Lions Gold team was a bit short-handed on this night with only six players but they still kept things tight early on.  The UW-Stout team would take a 2-0 lead on a steal and lay-up the other way early on in the opening period but this game would be leveled at 10-all with 2:15 left in the first period.  A late run by the UW-Stout team gave them a bit more breathing room by the end of the first period with a 17-13 lead.  The UW-Stout team began taking advantage of the situation once the second period got underway as they would grow their lead to 25-16 by the 6:30 mark but the Lions Gold team would hang tough down the stretch; closing the gap to five at 27-22 with 1:30 left but the UW-Stout team would grow the lead to eight at 30-22 by the halftime break.  The UW-Stout team would establish a ten-point cushion at 35-25 at the 7:15 mark of the third period and by the end of the third period, that lead would expand to eighteen points at 52-34.  By the 6:30 mark of the fourth period, the UW-Stout team was running away with this one at 60-38 as they coasted to an easy win......A bit of a tighter matchup over on Court 2 between the UNW Eagles team and the Anoka-Ramsey team.  The Anoka-Ramsey team would hold a 3-2 edge at the 7:50 mark of the opening period but the UNW Eagles team would turn the tables and hold a 9-8 advantage with 3:50 left and they would maintain this one-point edge at 12-11 with 2:00 left in the first period.  By the end of the first period, the UNW Eagles team was able to establish a bit more breathing room with a 16-11 lead.  By the 2:15 mark of the second period, the UNW Eagles team grew its lead to 27-18 and by the halftime break they would own a ten-point cushion at 33-23.  The Anoka Ramsey team was able to momentarily crawl back to within single digits down 36-28 by the 6:00 mark of the third period but the UNW Eagles team would embark on another run to restore the double-digit advantage at 43-28 by the end of the third period.  The UNW Eagles team would maintain this cushion with a 48-34 lead at the 6:25 mark of the fourth period as they would claim the win on this night......Not much drama over on Court 3 in this time slot that that the KATZ team (St. Kate's) taking on the Free Agents team.  The Free Agents team wasted little time in racing out to a 12-3 advantage by the 7:25 mark of the opening period and they would up that lead to 15-3 by the midway point of the first period.  By the end of the first period, the Free Agents team already had a sizable 25-8 lead and it would only get worse for the KATZ team as the Free Agents team would be holding a 41-17 lead by the halftime break.  The Free Agents team would have a thirty-point cushion midway through the third period at 52-22 and that lead would balloon to 60-27 with 2:05 left in the third period and the Free Agents team would be up 61-32 by the end of the third period.  By the midway point of the fourth period, the Free Agents team was rolling up 77-37 as they got the blowout win on this night.........Over on Court 4, the Lions Black team was taking on The HAMster Balls team and the Lions Black team would own a 6-0 lead by the 7:05 mark of the opening period thanks to a pretty three-point bomb by graduate senior Emma (not evil) Kniefel and by the end of the first period, the Lions Black team had already established a ten-point cushion up 15-5.  With 1:45 left in the second period, the Lions Black team had upped its lead to 28-14 and they would own a 31-14 lead by the halftime break.  The HAMster Balls team would attempt to cut into this cushion and had the Lions Black team's lead down to 33-20 by the 6:15 mark of the third period but the Lions Black team would re-establish that seventeen-point lead at 42-25 with 2:45 left in the third period and they would grow that lead to 49-26 by the end of the third period.  By the midway point of the fourth period, the Lions Black team was cruising with a 59-30 advantage and they coasted the rest of the way.

Another double night of action coming up this next week with games on both Tuesday and Wednesday nights so make sure you get yourself down to the Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League to catch all the action.

The HAMster Balls - 48

Retired Athletes - 61

7:15 PM Games

The Curry Crew - 69

CSB - 41

Anoka-Ramsey - 68

Luther - 55

In the 6:15 PM slot over on Court 1, a good game was brewing between the Bemidji St team and the Lions Gold team (one of the two GAC teams in this years Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League).  This contest would start out as a low-scoring affair with the Lions Gold team grabbing a 4-0 lead near the midway point of the opening period and they would maintain this four-point edge at 13-9 by the end of the first period.  The Bemidji St team would manage to get this game leveled at 13 by the 7:20 mark of the second period and by the latter stages of the second period, they would have the upper hand with a 26-20 advantage.  But a late "3" by the Lions Gold team would tighten things up by the halftime break with the Bemidji St team clinging to a 26-23 lead.  The Lions Gold team would assume control of this contest once the third period got underway; building a 38-31 lead in the early stages of the third period although the Bemidji St team would manage to narrow the Lions Gold lead to just 39-35 midway through the third period.  Once the fourth period got underway, the Lions Gold team would assume control of this game for good as they built a 54-47 lead by the 7:00 mark and had a ten-point cushion at 61-51 with 2:25 left and they would maintain that down the home stretch for the win........Over on Court 2, The HAMster Balls (Hamline) team was taking on a team called the Free Agents team and The HAMster Balls team would take control early; building an early 5-0 lead and stretching that lead to 10-0 by the 6:05 mark of the first period.  Even though the Free Agents team was finally able to dust off the cobwebs forming on its basket, The HAMster Balls team still held a 9-3 advantage with 2:35 left and it wasn't until the latter stages that the Free Agents team found some semblance of offense to cut The HAMster Balls team's lead to 12-7 by the end of the first period.  The HAMster Balls team was able to establish a bit more breathing room at 18-12 in the early stages of the second period and a tough score in the paint by senior-to-be Kate Van Helden midway through the second period allowed The HAMster Balls team to maintain the cushion and by the halftime break they had established a 26-18 advantage.  The HAMster Balls team would build on this momentum once the third period got underway and in the latter stages of the third period that had built a double-digit advantage at 33-22 and were able to extend that lead to 37-23 by the end of the third period.  Not much changed in this contest once the fourth period was underway with The HAMster Balls team owning a 39-27 lead midway through the fourth period as they had things in cruise control the rest of the way.......The game over on Court 3 in this time slot was easily the game of the night that saw the Retired Athletes team taking on another  mixed alumni team - the Guards Of The Galaxy team.  The latter would hold a 5-2 edge by the 8:26 mark of the first period and they would hold the edge by the midway portion of this opening period.  But the Retired Athletes team finally got into a groove to grab an 11-10 advantage late in the first period.  Not to be outdone, the Guards Of The Galaxy team would come right back and take a 19-14 lead by the end of the first period.  Right back came the Retired Athletes team as they would forge ahead again at 23-21 midway through the second period but, unfazed by the ebb and flow of this game thus far, the Guards Of The Galaxy team would come right back and grab a 33-29 lead by the halftime break.  It looked as if the Guards Of The Galaxy team might take control of things early on in the third period when former GAC standout Maddy Rice connected on a lay-up that gave them a 35-29 advantage and in the latter stages of the third period, things certainly appeared to be going the way the Guards Of The Galaxy team had planned things with a nine-point lead at 40-31.  But the Retired Athletes team got a big lift from former Park Center/Concordia St Paul/USF standout Danielle Schaub as her long jumper helped spark a comeback that cut the Guards Of The Galaxy team's lead down to a tenuous 44-42 advantage by the end of the third period.  Things would stay tight once the fourth period got underway and by the midway point, the Retired Athletes team had this contest leveled at 53 a piece and neither team seemed to be in the mood to concede an inch.  With 1:50 left in regulation, the Retired Athletes team was trying to hang on to a 59-56 lead but that lead would be cut to just one at 59-58 with 1:05 left.  Schaub would get one free throw to go down with :41 left in regulation that gave the Retired Athletes team a 60-58 lead but that wouldn't last long as the Guards Of The Galaxy team would soon get this contest leveled again at 60 so off to a two minute overtime period we went.  The Retired Athletes team would poke its nose out in front once more when Schaub got one free throw to go down with :41 left to make it 61-60 but on the ensuing possession by the Guards Of The Galaxy team, former GAC standout Marisa Gustafson (GAC '21) likely made the play of the night by snaring a tough offensive rebound and getting a lay-up out of it to give the Guards Of The Galaxy team a 62-61 lead.  The Retired Athletes team still had one last chance in the waning seconds but weren't able to score and the Guards Of The Galaxy team was able to ice things on free throws by Rice - one with :17 left and another with just :01 left to claim an exciting and fun win.

A busy, busy time in the 7:15 PM slot with four games going on that had my hopping from court to court; trying in vain to keep up with all developments - so bear with me.  😉  Not a lot of drama over on Court 1 where the Bemidji St team was doing double-duty on this night; this time taking on the Arden Hills team (Bethel).  This game would be tight in the early going with things tied up at 4-all midway through the opening period and things certainly seemed to be pointed in that direction with the game leveled at seven a piece by the end of the first period.  And the fact that the Bemidji St team would be clinging to a 17-16 lead by the halftime break did nothing to dispel that notion.  In fact, the Bemidji St team was still only up by just one at 24-23 midway through the third period.  But it was here that the Arden Hills team started running out of gas and that would allow the Bemidji St team to get its cushion up to six at 34-28 with 1:25 left in the third period.  By the midway point of the fourth period, the Bemidji St team had built a ten-point cushion at 41-31 and they were in full control the rest of the way......The contest going on over on Court 2 between the UNW Eagles team and the GAC Alumni team was a similar tight affair but this one would stay close throughout.  The GAC Alumni team would own a 14-10 advantage with 3:51 left in the opening period and would be up 26-21 by the end of the first period.  The GAC Alumni team would maintain this five-point edge up 29-24 midway through the second period but the UNW Eagles team would cut that deficit down to three points at 33-30 with 2:00 left in the second period but the GAC Alumni team would get a bit of a reprieve on two late scores that allowed them to own a 37-35 lead by the halftime break.  The UNW Eagles team would get this game tied up at 41 a piece in the late stages of the third period and they would eventually take a 54-51 lead with 4:30 left in regulation.  But just when the GAC Alumni team appeared to be in a tough spot, they responded down the stretch and took the lead back; up 64-58 with 1:05 left to claim the tough victory......Court 3 featured an interesting matchup between The Currey Crew team and the CSB team.  The CSB team would be up 7-4 midway thru the first period but The Currey Crew team would soon come right back to take a 16-10 lead by the end of the first period.  The Currey Crew team would then go on a big run that saw them grow their lead to 30-16 with 3:25 left in the second period and by the latter stages of the third period, that lead grew to 44-27.  The Currey Crew team grew its lead to 62-37 by the 7:30 mark of the fourth period and there was little doubt with how this one was going to go with 2:50 left in regulation with The Currey Crew up 66-39.........Court 4 saw the Luther team taking on the Anoka-Ramsey team and the Anoka-Ramsey team would bolt out to an 11-4 advantage with 3:00 left in the first period but the Luther team would storm back to take a 15-11 lead by the end of the first period.  The Anoka-Ramsey team would steady the ship and retake the lead at 24-20 in the latter stages of the second period and they would maintain this four-point edge by the halftime break up 26-22.  The Anoka-Ramsey team still had the upper hand midway through the third period with a 38-33 advantage and by the 7:10 mark of the fourth period, the Anoka-Ramsey team had slowly taken control with a 56-45 lead and they would be able to maintain this double-digit cushion down the home stretch; up 61-51 with 3:40 left in regulation and got the win.

Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League Update - And Another MIAC Coaching Vacancy

So just wanted to update everybody on the upcoming Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League.  Things get underway tomorrow (Tuesday 6-4) night and the first two weeks will have games on both Tuesday and Wednesday evenings in the 6:15, 7:15 and 8:15 PM slots before things revert to a Wednesday evening format the rest of the way.  And the league will take a week off during the fourth of July and resume again on Wednesday 7-10.  A lot of interesting new teams and some familiar ones as well just from what I've seen on this week's schedule so you'll definitely want to get down to catch the action.  And I'll be down there to cover what I can too.

Also wanted to touch on the somewhat unexpected retirement announcement coming out of Augsburg this afternoon with Ted Riverso stepping away after nine seasons at the helm.  Riverso came to Augsburg back in 2015 after the untimely passing of then head coach Bill McKee and inherited a program that was looking to get to the upper echelon in the conference.  It took a few years but Riverso finally had a title contender in both 2019 and 2020 with his famed "Fab 5" squad that reached the MIAC Championship Game in both seasons.  In the 2021-22 season, Riverso got his team to yet another MIAC Championship Game as well.  It's unfortunate to this day that none of these great Auggie teams were selected to go to the NCAA Tournament but it's safe to say that Riverso took the program to new heights during his tenure.  Now the question for Augsburg AD Jeff Swenson is who do they try and get to fill the vacancy.  Keep in mind that it's one thing to have a vacancy for a head coaching position in March/April when the proverbial coaching carousel starts going around.  Quite another when you get to June and the said carousel has slowed considerably.  Still, it's a very good job and it'll be interesting to see who they ultimately select for the position.  In any event, best wishes to Ted Riverso in his future endeavors.

So it should be a fun time down at the Midtown YWCA beginning tomorrow night.  Hope to see you all there!
