In the 6:15 PM slot over on Court 1, a good game was brewing between the Bemidji St team and the Lions Gold team (one of the two GAC teams in this years Midtown YWCA Women's College Summer League).  This contest would start out as a low-scoring affair with the Lions Gold team grabbing a 4-0 lead near the midway point of the opening period and they would maintain this four-point edge at 13-9 by the end of the first period.  The Bemidji St team would manage to get this game leveled at 13 by the 7:20 mark of the second period and by the latter stages of the second period, they would have the upper hand with a 26-20 advantage.  But a late "3" by the Lions Gold team would tighten things up by the halftime break with the Bemidji St team clinging to a 26-23 lead.  The Lions Gold team would assume control of this contest once the third period got underway; building a 38-31 lead in the early stages of the third period although the Bemidji St team would manage to narrow the Lions Gold lead to just 39-35 midway through the third period.  Once the fourth period got underway, the Lions Gold team would assume control of this game for good as they built a 54-47 lead by the 7:00 mark and had a ten-point cushion at 61-51 with 2:25 left and they would maintain that down the home stretch for the win........Over on Court 2, The HAMster Balls (Hamline) team was taking on a team called the Free Agents team and The HAMster Balls team would take control early; building an early 5-0 lead and stretching that lead to 10-0 by the 6:05 mark of the first period.  Even though the Free Agents team was finally able to dust off the cobwebs forming on its basket, The HAMster Balls team still held a 9-3 advantage with 2:35 left and it wasn't until the latter stages that the Free Agents team found some semblance of offense to cut The HAMster Balls team's lead to 12-7 by the end of the first period.  The HAMster Balls team was able to establish a bit more breathing room at 18-12 in the early stages of the second period and a tough score in the paint by senior-to-be Kate Van Helden midway through the second period allowed The HAMster Balls team to maintain the cushion and by the halftime break they had established a 26-18 advantage.  The HAMster Balls team would build on this momentum once the third period got underway and in the latter stages of the third period that had built a double-digit advantage at 33-22 and were able to extend that lead to 37-23 by the end of the third period.  Not much changed in this contest once the fourth period was underway with The HAMster Balls team owning a 39-27 lead midway through the fourth period as they had things in cruise control the rest of the way.......The game over on Court 3 in this time slot was easily the game of the night that saw the Retired Athletes team taking on another  mixed alumni team - the Guards Of The Galaxy team.  The latter would hold a 5-2 edge by the 8:26 mark of the first period and they would hold the edge by the midway portion of this opening period.  But the Retired Athletes team finally got into a groove to grab an 11-10 advantage late in the first period.  Not to be outdone, the Guards Of The Galaxy team would come right back and take a 19-14 lead by the end of the first period.  Right back came the Retired Athletes team as they would forge ahead again at 23-21 midway through the second period but, unfazed by the ebb and flow of this game thus far, the Guards Of The Galaxy team would come right back and grab a 33-29 lead by the halftime break.  It looked as if the Guards Of The Galaxy team might take control of things early on in the third period when former GAC standout Maddy Rice connected on a lay-up that gave them a 35-29 advantage and in the latter stages of the third period, things certainly appeared to be going the way the Guards Of The Galaxy team had planned things with a nine-point lead at 40-31.  But the Retired Athletes team got a big lift from former Park Center/Concordia St Paul/USF standout Danielle Schaub as her long jumper helped spark a comeback that cut the Guards Of The Galaxy team's lead down to a tenuous 44-42 advantage by the end of the third period.  Things would stay tight once the fourth period got underway and by the midway point, the Retired Athletes team had this contest leveled at 53 a piece and neither team seemed to be in the mood to concede an inch.  With 1:50 left in regulation, the Retired Athletes team was trying to hang on to a 59-56 lead but that lead would be cut to just one at 59-58 with 1:05 left.  Schaub would get one free throw to go down with :41 left in regulation that gave the Retired Athletes team a 60-58 lead but that wouldn't last long as the Guards Of The Galaxy team would soon get this contest leveled again at 60 so off to a two minute overtime period we went.  The Retired Athletes team would poke its nose out in front once more when Schaub got one free throw to go down with :41 left to make it 61-60 but on the ensuing possession by the Guards Of The Galaxy team, former GAC standout Marisa Gustafson (GAC '21) likely made the play of the night by snaring a tough offensive rebound and getting a lay-up out of it to give the Guards Of The Galaxy team a 62-61 lead.  The Retired Athletes team still had one last chance in the waning seconds but weren't able to score and the Guards Of The Galaxy team was able to ice things on free throws by Rice - one with :17 left and another with just :01 left to claim an exciting and fun win.

A busy, busy time in the 7:15 PM slot with four games going on that had my hopping from court to court; trying in vain to keep up with all developments - so bear with me.  😉  Not a lot of drama over on Court 1 where the Bemidji St team was doing double-duty on this night; this time taking on the Arden Hills team (Bethel).  This game would be tight in the early going with things tied up at 4-all midway through the opening period and things certainly seemed to be pointed in that direction with the game leveled at seven a piece by the end of the first period.  And the fact that the Bemidji St team would be clinging to a 17-16 lead by the halftime break did nothing to dispel that notion.  In fact, the Bemidji St team was still only up by just one at 24-23 midway through the third period.  But it was here that the Arden Hills team started running out of gas and that would allow the Bemidji St team to get its cushion up to six at 34-28 with 1:25 left in the third period.  By the midway point of the fourth period, the Bemidji St team had built a ten-point cushion at 41-31 and they were in full control the rest of the way......The contest going on over on Court 2 between the UNW Eagles team and the GAC Alumni team was a similar tight affair but this one would stay close throughout.  The GAC Alumni team would own a 14-10 advantage with 3:51 left in the opening period and would be up 26-21 by the end of the first period.  The GAC Alumni team would maintain this five-point edge up 29-24 midway through the second period but the UNW Eagles team would cut that deficit down to three points at 33-30 with 2:00 left in the second period but the GAC Alumni team would get a bit of a reprieve on two late scores that allowed them to own a 37-35 lead by the halftime break.  The UNW Eagles team would get this game tied up at 41 a piece in the late stages of the third period and they would eventually take a 54-51 lead with 4:30 left in regulation.  But just when the GAC Alumni team appeared to be in a tough spot, they responded down the stretch and took the lead back; up 64-58 with 1:05 left to claim the tough victory......Court 3 featured an interesting matchup between The Currey Crew team and the CSB team.  The CSB team would be up 7-4 midway thru the first period but The Currey Crew team would soon come right back to take a 16-10 lead by the end of the first period.  The Currey Crew team would then go on a big run that saw them grow their lead to 30-16 with 3:25 left in the second period and by the latter stages of the third period, that lead grew to 44-27.  The Currey Crew team grew its lead to 62-37 by the 7:30 mark of the fourth period and there was little doubt with how this one was going to go with 2:50 left in regulation with The Currey Crew up 66-39.........Court 4 saw the Luther team taking on the Anoka-Ramsey team and the Anoka-Ramsey team would bolt out to an 11-4 advantage with 3:00 left in the first period but the Luther team would storm back to take a 15-11 lead by the end of the first period.  The Anoka-Ramsey team would steady the ship and retake the lead at 24-20 in the latter stages of the second period and they would maintain this four-point edge by the halftime break up 26-22.  The Anoka-Ramsey team still had the upper hand midway through the third period with a 38-33 advantage and by the 7:10 mark of the fourth period, the Anoka-Ramsey team had slowly taken control with a 56-45 lead and they would be able to maintain this double-digit cushion down the home stretch; up 61-51 with 3:40 left in regulation and got the win.
